Daniel Jones wants a bigger bag
The New York Giants came into the offseason hoping to get a long-term deal done with quarterback Daniel Jones. Just a few days ahead of the franchise tag deadline, it appears that won’t happen this offseason. A new report came out on what Jones expects the Giants to pay annually for him to agree to an extension. It’s astronomical.

Previous figures for Jones’ expectations were thought to be around $45 million a year. That was considered extremely high for a quarterback who only looked like a bottom-tier starting quarterback in one of his four seasons in the NFL.
According to Pat Leonard of the New York Daily News, Jones wants more than $45 million to sign an extension with the Giants:
“League sources tell the Daily News that Jones’ representatives are asking for more than $45 million per year on a multi-year contract extension.
That’s over $12.6 million more than what Schoen could get Jones for in 2023 on the $32.4 million non-exclusive franchise tag.”
That’s absolutely crazy.
Jones’ is nowhere near the value of Philadelphia Eagles Jalen Hurts, and that’s around where Hurts will likely agree to a new deal this offseason. Furthermore, that’s a bigger deal than Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen. It makes a bit more sense as to why Jones would need to switch agent representation this offseason.

Jones’ bet could backfire next offseason
One wonders if the franchise tag cost nearly $32 million this season is worth Jones’ services in 2023. The Giants, who would have to lose running back Saquon Barkley if they apply the franchise tag to Jones, should consider letting Jones walk.
Jones’ stubbornness is a gamble that could cost him next offseason if he can’t do better than the measly 15 touchdown passes he threw in the 2022 season. No other team will likely bite on a contract worth MVP money for a quarterback who hasn’t made the Pro Bowl.
