The Indianapolis Colts signed quarterback Daniel Jones to a one-year deal in the offseason. Jones was released by the New York Giants during the middle of the 2024 NFL season and then he signed with the Minnesota Vikings practice squad.

The Colts finished with an 8-9 record last season and have not made the playoffs since 2020. There are major questions about quarterback Anthony Richardson entering the 2025 NFL season and he is also dealing with a shoulder injury. Indianapolis will have a starting quarterback battle in training camp and head coach Shane Steichen will need to decide who fits best to be the starter for the 2025 season.
Indianapolis Colts Insider Reveals That Daniel Jones Is Quarterback 1 For Now

James Boyd of The Athletic covers the Colts and he talked about the one thing he noticed during OTAs and mandatory minicamp. He believes that Jones for now has the edge as the starting quarterback over Richardson. Boyd said,
“Daniel Jones is QB1 (for now). The Colts signed the ex-Giants/Vikings quarterback in free agency to challenge Anthony Richardson for the QB1 title in Indy, and Jones has already taken a significant lead in what was supposed to be a wide-open quarterback competition. Richardson, the 2023 No. 4 pick, aggravated the surgically repaired AC joint in his throwing shoulder May 29 and was shut down for the rest of the spring. There is no timetable for his return, per Colts coach Shane Steichen, which further positions Jones to take over as the Week 1 starter. “
If Richardson is not the Week 1 starter for this football team, there is a chance that he may never get his starting job back for Indianapolis. The Colts maybe better off with Jones for the 2025 season and he is a better quarterback than Richardson is. Jones during the 2024 NFL season, he completed 63.3% of his passes for 2,070 yards, eight touchdowns, and seven interceptions. He also rushed for 265 yards on 67 carries and two touchdowns, along with averaging 4.0 yards per carry.
Jones is 28 years old, and he is looking to prove himself with Indianapolis for the 2025 NFL season. If he plays well for the Colts in 2025, then it appears as if maybe he will get another contract with them. The Colts also play in a winnable AFC South division.
