Last weekend, college football fans experienced a great game between number two Ohio State and third-ranked Oregon, and the Ducks pulled off the one-point upset.
Oregon’s head coach, Dan Lanning, pulled off a mastermind move with ten seconds left in the game. He sent out 12 players on defense so Oregon would have an advantage on the field and only get a five-yard penalty and run time off the clock.

Ohio State did not have enough time to kick a game-winning field goal, and a lot of that had to do with Ohio State’s head coach Ryan Day’s poor clock management.
Day has been a head coach for six years and has had a hard time managing the clock late in games, while Lanning is now in his third season and looks smarter than everyone else in the fourth quarter.
Dan Lanning Could End Up At Ohio State

Many have called for Day to be fired, and if the team falls short of winning a title, Day could be gone. Dan Lanning should be their first call if the program were to make a move.
Lanning is the brightest young head coach in the game, and there is no way he will want to stay at Oregon forever. No offense to Oregon, but it’s not exactly a program that the top coaches are interested in, and the last four head coaches to coach the program either left on their own or got fired.
There is no way Lanning will want to stay in Eugene, and Ohio State is the most wanted job in college football.
Being the head coach of the Buckeyes is like being the coach of the Dallas Cowboys. It’s coaching America’s team, and Ohio State has the county’s largest, most active fanbase.

Notre Dame used to be the top job for head coaches, but once Brian Kelly left for LSU, that was the end.
There is a chance Lanning would tell Ohio State no, and there are rumors that he turned down both the Texas A&M and Alabama jobs last season, but turning down the Buckeyes would be hard.
Lanning has proven he can get five-star players all over the country to head to Oregon, which is pretty much like going to the end of the world, but think what he could do with all the high school talent in Ohio.
Ohio State’s new athletic director, Ross Bjork, who came over from Texas A&M this summer, is going to want to swing big for a major head coach if he fires Day. The biggest home run you could hit now in sports is hiring Dan Lanning. There will be so many boosters backing Bjork to get the job done.
A lot still has to happen for Day not to be back with the Buckeyes next season, but if he doesn’t return, Ohio State will go all out, and Lanning should be the number one target.
