Cooper Rush made his second consecutive start for the Dallas Cowboys in Week 11. Rush didn’t play well, going 32-of-55 passing for 354 yards, one touchdown and one interception. The former Central Michigan quarterback took five sacks and fumbled twice, losing one fumble. He missed several open receivers in the Cowboys’ 34-10 loss to the Houston Texans at AT&T Stadium on Monday night.
Rush has now led the Cowboys offense to 16 points in two games. Dallas was blown out 34-6 by the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 10. With Rush’s struggles leading the offense, many fans on social media were questioning why Trey Lance wasn’t put in the game.
Trey Lance should have seen some action
Following the loss Monday night, head coach Mike McCarthy said he regretted not putting in Lance for a drive at the end of the game. The Cowboys traded a fourth-round pick to the San Francisco 49ers last year for the former first-round pick. Dallas should see what his abilities are before Lance’s contract expires at the end of the season.
The Dallas Cowboys want Cooper Rush to start
During his postgame talk with the media, owner Jerry Jones said his preference was for Dallas to keep Rush as the starter with Dak Prescott out for the season with a hamstring injury, per Jon Machota of The Athletic.
“Jones said he wants to stick with Cooper Rush over Trey Lance at QB because Rush gives them the best chance to win games,” Machota posted on X.
Jones’ statement was an indictment of what he thinks of Lance, given that he thinks Rush has a better chance of winning games despite being outscored 68-16 in his last two starts.
Jerry Jones undermined Mike McCarthy
Jones’ answer also undermined his head coach, as it’s McCarthy’s job to be the one to give his opinion on who should be under center without interference from ownership. Despite Jones flagging the world that McCarthy isn’t making all the coaching decisions for Dallas, he defended McCarthy from the idea that players might be giving up on him–as evidenced by back-to-back blowouts.
“I worry a lot about execution,” Jones said. “I worry a lot about communication in the (offensive) line. I worry a lot about having two people in the same spot on routes. I worry a lot about all that stuff. But guys giving the effort out? (No.) You don’t need to worry about anybody in that locker room giving everything they got and more.”

All that the locker room has is a quarterback that can average leading his team to eight points per start. The Cowboys will travel to play the Washington Commanders at Northwest Stadium in Week 12.
