Dallas Cowboys React to Start of Cooper Flagg Era With Mavericks

As expected, the Dallas Mavericks took Duke Blue Devils product Cooper Flagg as the first pick overall in the 2025 NBA draft Wednesday night in Brooklyn. The Dallas Cowboys were quick to react to Flagg getting selected by their pro sports brethren, as were many others.

Flagg represents new hope for the Mavericks, who went through one of the most gut-wrenching seasons a pro franchise has had in recent memory.

The stunning trade of Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers still stings for Mavericks and Dallas sports fans, and it’s going to take more time for them to completely move on from that. But with Flagg, who’s arguably the most-hyped NBA draft prospect since LeBron James, the Mavericks are getting a young talent who could soon be the face of the franchise.

In one season with the Blue Devils, Flagg, who is from Newport, Maine, put up averages of 19.2 points, 7.5 reobunds and 4.2 assists in 37 games.

The Cowboys, who are preparing for the upcoming 2025 NFL season, shared a message for Flagg after the Mavericks picked him first overall.

“Welcome to Dallas, @Cooper_Flagg!  #DallasCowboys x @dallasmavs,” the Cowboys’ post on Twitter (formerly Twitter) read.

Speaking of first-round picks, the Cowboys have had three of those in the past, though the last one was way back in 1991 when they took defensive tackle Russell Maryland. The other two were defensive end Ed “Too Tall” Jones in 1974 and quarterback Troy Aikman in 1989.
