Dak Prescott and the Dallas Cowboys enter the 2024 season with significant pressure with the backdrop being the quarterback entering the final year of his contract and his top wide receiver holding out for a new deal.
While CeeDee Lamb is locked in ongoing contract talks, and limited depth behind him, wide receiver could be a position the Cowboys scour the waiver wire for after final roster cuts or aggressively look to add via a trade as the season opener looms.
Given the receiving corps that some teams have built around the league, adding a veteran to help Prescott might prove to be an easy box for the Cowboys to check before taking the field in Cleveland against the Browns.
Could the Dallas Cowboys Trade for Robert Woods?
The Houston Texans have built what has the potential to be one of the most prolific receiving corps in the NFL, especially after landing Stefon Diggs in a blockbuster trade with the Buffalo Bills.
Veteran Robert Woods, despite a career in which he’s produced 8,030 receiving yards and caught 38 touchdowns, could be the odd-man-out.
Bleacher Report NFL analyst Kristopher Knox suggests the Cowboys could land Woods in a trade in the coming weeks.
“Houston could save roughly $5 million in cap space by releasing Woods,” Knox points out for B/R. “But, would save $6.5 million by trading him. If he’s on the bubble for financial reasons, the Texans would probably accept any reasonable trade offer.
“Woods would be a great addition to any reloading team with a young quarterback, just as he was for the Texans last season. However, he could also be an acceptable budget-friendly option for a potential contender looking to bolster its receiving corps. That includes Dallas, which has underwhelming depth behind Lamb.”
Given Brandin Cooks’ inconsistent career-arc, and the fact that Jalen Tolbert, Jalen Brooks, and Kevonta Turpin combined for 36 receptions last season, Woods’ reliability and experience could prove to be a key missing ingredient for the Cowboys’ aerial attack.
