The Dallas Cowboys made a big splash in free agency when they traded for Brandin Cooks. After being on the trade block for almost a year, the Houston Texans finally pulled the trigger and sent him to Dallas. The Cowboys needed more receiver help next to CeeDee Lamb after no one stepped up last year. However, some questioned whether there would be a clash between the receivers and who would be number one. Cooks squashed any hint of conflict in a recent interview.
Dallas Cowboys Receiver Brandin Cooks
In an appearance on the Adam Schefter podcast, Cooks talked openly about his role for the Dallas Cowboys this season.
“CeeDee, you’re talking about a guy that’s been electric since the moment he stepped into this league, but you saw last year what he did to really just go into that mode of a true No. 1 receiver. I’ve got a lot of respect for his game from afar, and I hit him up and was like, ‘Look, I’m coming to just help.’ Like, there’s no ego.”
Cooks has a lot of respect for Lamb and he is not going to try and get in the way of his development. In the Cowboys’ offense, there should be plenty of receptions to go around and with Lamb possibly being doubled more, Cooks could see more opportunities. Honestly, Cooks is probably just happy to be playing football which matters.
Make Or Break Year
The Cowboys feel like they are in a make-or-break year. After firing Kellen Moore, Mike McCarthy will call plays this season. If the Cowboys cannot get over the hump in a weak NFC, expect a lot of heads to roll in Dallas. I have no doubt that barring significant injury the Cowboys will be in the playoffs but the question is whether they can translate the success from the regular season to the postseason.
Brandin Cooks should help the Cowboys’ offense a lot. Last year, the Achilles heel of the offense was the fact that outside of Lamb, there was no one that could make a big play. The team is poised for a Super Bowl run. The question is whether they can finish the job this year or add it to the list of playoff heartbreak.
