The Dallas Cowboys are busily preparing for the 2024 NFL season. While the future of three-time Pro Bowl quarterback Dak Prescott is not secure, there is no question that he will be their starting quarterback this season (and beyond if/when the two sides agree to a contract extension). Last season, Prescott finished second in NFL MVP voting after completing 69.5% of his passes for 4,516 yards, 36 touchdowns, just nine interceptions, and a 105.3 passer rating.
The bigger question regarding the quarterback position is which player will serve as Prescott’s backup this season. This is a role that Cooper Rush has held for each of the past six seasons, but the addition of Trey Lance late last summer as the team’s third-string quarterback was one that raised a lot of eyebrows.
Why Did the Dallas Cowboys Trade for Quarterback Trey Lance?

With Prescott and Rush entrenched as their top two quarterbacks, many wondered why Dallas would give up a fourth-round pick for Lance. At the time of the trade, team owner Jerry Jones said, “He gives us an opportunity to do what we would always like to be doing. It would be ideal with Dak to have a young, prospective, developing quarterback that could just be in the room.”
And so, Lance went from being the third string quarterback on the San Francisco 49ersto being the third string quarterback in Dallas.
Still, a fourth-round pick seemed like a steep price to pay for a third-string player at any position, especially at quarterback.

Jones made some more waves regarding Lance and his place on the team over the weekend when he said, “I’d like to see us really be able to have our quarterback depth. I’d like to see him get some more work in this weekend, that would be number-one.
Dallas Cowboys Head Coach Mike McCarthy Will Not Commit to a Specific Backup Quarterback Yet

On Wednesday, head coach Mike McCarthy was asked if he will have a difficult decision choosing between Rush and Lance for the role of backup quarterback. He responded (via Jon Machota), “I think just like anything, you play this all the way out. You can never have enough good quarterbacks, and we got three good ones. We’re fortunate.”
The regular season starts soon, and the Cowboys still have not agreed to a contract extension with All-Pro wide receiver CeeDee Lamb. They haven’t come to agreements with Prescott or Micah Parsons either, for that matter.
But at least they have three good quarterbacks.
