Following the Pittsburgh Steelers’ narrow 20-17 loss to the Dallas Cowboys, wide receiver George Pickens found himself at the center of controversy after cornerback Jourdan Lewis criticized him.
As Lewis exited Acrisure Stadium, he expressed his disdain for Pickens, stating, “Pittsburgh need a receiver. George Pickens is weak.” This comment drew attention, especially since Pickens had a frustrating game, managing only three catches for 26 yards despite being targeted seven times.
The on-field tension escalated after the final play, where Pickens was seen pulling on Lewis’s facemask, leading to a brief confrontation that required intervention from a referee. This incident highlighted the competitive nature of both players and raised questions about Pickens’s performance this season.
Through five games, Pickens has recorded 23 receptions for 310 yards but has yet to score a touchdown. His snap count has also decreased, with him participating in 73% of the offensive plays, marking the lowest percentage of his career.

Meanwhile, Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin addressed these concerns, explaining that the coaching staff is managing Pickens’s snaps to enhance his productivity. Tomlin emphasized that this strategy was not due to any underlying issues but rather about optimizing performance over the long haul.
While Lewis’s remarks stirred up discussions among fans and analysts, they also reflect the high expectations placed on young talents like Pickens. As the season progresses, it will be crucial for him to respond positively to criticism and improve his contributions to the team’s offense. The Steelers will be looking for more from Pickens as they strive to regain momentum and secure wins in the competitive AFC North.
