Even though Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has said that he is all in for the 2024, very few believe him. And for good reason. Despite giving head coach Mike McCarthy an ultimatum (go on an extended run in the NFL Playoffs or he won’t get a new contract), Jones has done very little to improve the Cowboys roster from the one that was blown out by the Green Bay Packers in the Wild Card Round last season.
In fact, one could argue that the Cowboys got worse this offseason, especially on offense. Tyron Smith, the eight-time Pro Bowl left tackle, was allowed to leave and sign with the New York Jets. Running back Tony Pollard signed with the Tennessee Titans, leaving Dallas without a starting running back.
To replace those players, Jones turned to his former star, Ezekiel Elliott, who had the worst season of his career with the New England Patriots last season. At left tackle, Smith is being replaced by 2024 first-round pick Tyler Guyton.
Dak Prescott and Two Other Dallas Cowboys Stars Need New Contracts
Everyone, at this point, is well aware of the contract situations revolving around quarterback Dak Prescott, wide receiver CeeDee Lamb, and linebacker Micah Parsons. As time continues to go by with no deal for any of them, the chances of the Cowboys being able to retain them diminishes.
After Packers quarterback Jordan Love signed his four-year $220 million contract extension, Prescott was left as the only high-profile player at the position who was extension eligible. It is widely accepted that Prescott will make more than the $55 million annual salary that Love got, meaning that the Cowboys’ star quarterback will soon become the highest-paid player in NFL history.
The fact of the matter, too, is that Dallas needs to pay him or 2024 will be his last in a Cowboys uniform. Prescott has a no-trade no-tag clause in his current deal, which means that Dallas cannot place the franchise tag on him next year in an effort to prolong contract negotiations.
If the Cowboys do not succeed in 2024 and there is major roster and coaching staff turnover, and if he has not signed a contract extension by the end of the year, Prescott will leave.
And one NFL analyst has a good idea of where he will go.
NFL Analysts Predicts Dak Prescott Will Team Up with Davante Adams on the Las Vegas Raiders
In an article in which they list every team’s most glaring weaknesses ahead of the 2024 NFL season, Bleacher Report‘s scouting department included the quarterback position among the Las Vegas Raiders‘ biggest problems.
While there is not much the Raiders can do to improve the position in 2024, Bleacher Report argues that they make sense as a destination for Prescott should the Cowboys allow him to hit free agency:
“The Dallas Cowboys are playing a dangerous game by letting Dak Prescott get this far without a new contract. The 31-year-old is in the final year of his current deal, and the Cowboys also have contract negotiations with CeeDee Lamb and Micah Parsons to consider.
“If Prescott gets through this season without an extension, it would only make sense for him to at least see what he could get on the open market.
“The Raiders would make sense as a landing spot. Considering the supporting cast that includes Davante Adams, Brock Bowers, Jakobi Meyers and Michael Mayer with a promising defense, Prescott could be the missing piece.”
The draw for Prescott, of course, would be teaming up with three-time All-Pro wide receiver Davante Adams. Last season, with Jimmy Garoppolo and Aidan O’Connell as his quarterbacks, Adams had 103 receptions for 1,144 yards and eight touchdowns.
The last time he played with an elite quarterback like Prescott was in 2021, his last season with the Packers. That year, he had 123 receptions for 1,553 yards and 11 touchdowns catching passes from Aaron Rodgers.
Prescott and Adams would undoubtedly become one of the best quarterback-wide receiver duos in the NFL if this were to happen, it likely would mean that Dallas entered rebuild mode, and it may be a while before they see their own next franchise quarterback.
