The Dallas Cowboys and Dak Prescott saw the NFL quarterback market explode over the course of the offseason. As Prescott is entering the final year of his four-year $160 million contract, a new contract extension has been in the works for months. However, the expectation is that Prescott will become the highest-paid player in NFL history, and such a contract is not so easily or quickly agreed upon.
One thing that has complicated matters between Prescott and the Cowboys is the fact that Dallas also is trying to work out contract extensions with wide receiver CeeDee Lamb and linebacker Micah Parsons. Both players have told the Cowboys that they want $35 million a year.
While the Dallas Cowboys Negotiated a Dak Prescott Contract Extension, Other NFL Quarterbacks Reset the Market
While Prescott and the Cowboys have negotiated their upcoming deal, other NFL quarterbacks have signed some of the biggest contracts in league history. In total, four different NFL stars at the position inked new deals this year that surely drove up Prescott’s asking price.
First, the Detroit Lions gave Jared Goff a four-year $212 million extension. At the time, Goff’s $53 million average annual salary was the second highest in the NFL, only behind Joe Burrow of the Cincinnati Bengals who is earning $55 million a year.
Not long after Goff signed his contract extension, the Jacksonville Jaguars extended Trevor Lawrence with a five-year $275 million contract, tying Burrow with an average annual salary of $55 million.
After training camp began, two more NFL quarterbacks inked monster extensions on the same day. First, the Miami Dolphins and Tua Tagovailoa announced their agreement on a four-year $212.4 million contract, or $53.1 million a year. Then, the Green Bay Packers and Jordan Love announced their agreement on a four-year $220 million extension, which tied Burrow and Lawrence’s $55 million annual salary.
Love’s deal also included a $75 million signing bonus, the largest in NFL history.
Dallas Cowboys Quarterback Dak Prescott Provides Encouraging Update on Contract Talks
Despite the fact Prescott has not yet signed a contract extension, he is present and participating in training camp. With the regular season quickly approaching, some fans fear that a deal will not get done, which could mean that the three-time Pro Bowler leaves in free agency.
Based on his comments today, though, that should not be a concern:
“Good conversations are going on, I will say that. A lot of good things are going on there. A lot of confidence. I have confidence in my guys and these guys getting something done.
“I’m happy where I am right now and that’s really where my focus is. I enjoy being a Cowboy, one thousand percent. I enjoy living in Dallas. I enjoy everything about it. But this is a business. Conversations are going well. But I’m thankful to be where I am right now.”
No deal has been reached yet, but it sure does sound like there are positive movements in negotiations.
Once the deal is done, it very well could be the largest in the NFL history.
