The Dallas Cowboys are preparing for a 2024 NFL season that could very well determine the immediate future of their franchise. Most notably, the team is negotiation contract extensions for their three biggest stars: quarterback Dak Prescott, wide receiver CeeDee Lamb, and linebacker Micah Parsons.
With the quarterback market the way it is, Prescott is expected to sign a deal that will make him the highest paid player in NFL history. The Green Bay Packers recently gave Jordan Love a four-year $220 million contract that will pay him $55 million a year. Prescott is expected to make more.
Lamb and Parsons have expressed their desires to be the highest-paid non-quarterbacks in the NFL, a task that may prove to be impossible.
With questions surrounding their contract extensions, there is speculation that any one of the three stars could be playing elsewhere next season. Prescott recently addressed this possibility of becoming a free agent, but expressed confidence that a deal will get doe.
Dallas Cowboys Quarterback Dak Prescott Is Confident That He Will Sign a Contract Extension
In an interview with reporters on Friday, Prescott did not back away from the possibility that he could be playing elsewhere in 2025. He said, though, that he is not in any way thinking about or preparing for that scenario.
According to Fox 4 in Dallas:
“I’ve got a ton of confidence, but honestly, it’s not something I think about. I’m here in training camp and focused on this year. I’m on a contract for this year and that’s all I really care about.
“Having a kid, your perspective changes a little bit in life. A lot of quarterbacks have [played for other teams]. That’s just the business and nature of this game. That’s just me not being naive to that.
“[Leaving is] not something I look for, or prepare, even plan for, but if something like that happens, I’ll certainly be ready for it.”
For the Cowboys, it is certainly positive that Prescott is not thinking about anything beyond the 2024 season. The same cannot be said of Lamb, though, who is holding out for a new deal.
Does Dallas Cowboys Quarterback Dak Prescott Deserve to Be the Highest-Paid NFL Player?
Prescott is coming off of a season that saw him complete 69.5% of his passes for 4,516 yards, 36 touchdowns, nine interceptions, and a passer rating of 105.9. He led the NFL in both completions (410) and touchdown passes.
Prescott also finished second in MVP voting last season.
He has been named to the Pro Bowl three times and has an Offensive Rookie of the Year under his belt.
In other words, he is one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL. If the Cowboys do not make him the highest-paid player in the NFL, someone else surely will.
As mentioned previously, the market for quarterbacks is very high right now, especially for those as talented as Prescott. With the highest annual salary for players at his position set at $55 million, there is no doubt he will raise that standard on his next deal.
Dallas must decide whether or not they want to be the ones to give it to him.
