The Dallas Cowboys have had a very dramatic offseason. Owner Jerry Jones has constantly stated that he is “all in” to win, but the decisions that he has made regarding the Cowboys roster seem to indicate otherwise. Instead of getting a running back that would strengthen the offense, he instead brought back Ezekiel Elliott. He also has not made much progress on the possible contract extensions for his three biggest stars.
Quarterback Dak Prescott has drawn a great deal of attention in recent days as Jordan Love of the Green Bay Packers and Tua Tagovailoa of the Miami Dolphins each signed massive contract extensions. It has widely been assumed that, once those deals were done, Prescott would get the biggest contract in NFL history.
To his credit, Prescott has been present and practicing with the Cowboys despite the uncertainty surrounding his future with the organization. Wide receiver CeeDee Lamb, on the other hand, has been holding out.
Dallas Cowboys Wide Receiver CeeDee Lamb Wants a Massive Contract Extension
Cowboys wide receiver CeeDee Lamb is one of the best players at his position currently playing in the NFL. Last season, he had 135 receptions for 1,749 yards and 12 touchdowns. He made his third-consecutive Pro Bowl and was named First Team All-Pro.
2023 was also the third-straight season in which Lamb surpassed 1,000 receiving yards. The only year that he failed to reach that threshold was his rookie season (he had 935 receiving yards that season). In 2021, he had 74 receptions for 1,102 receiving yards and five touchdowns. The following season, he had 107 receptions for 1,359 yards and nine touchdowns.
Now, facing the prospect of playing on his fifth-year option, Lamb wants a new deal. According to Cowboys COO Stephen Jones, Lamb (and linebacker Micah Parsons) wants to be the highest-paid non-quarterback in the NFL.
Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Justin Jefferson currently holds that honor after signing a new contract that pays him $35 million a season.
NFL Analyst Has Positive Prediction for CeeDee Lamb Contract Dispute with the Dallas Cowboys
In an article in which he predicts the outcome of contract disputes among four players that are currently holding out from their team’s training camp, David Kenyon of Bleacher Report wrote that he believes the Cowboys and Lamb will eventually come to an understanding:
“As stubborn as Jones can operate, he surely recognizes that a holdout lingering into the season would be a huge problem for the offense. Dallas probably won’t have the star wideout at practice for a couple of weeks but needs to lock in Lamb—who’s entering the final year of his contract—before the season kicks off.”
Kenyon is, of course, accurate in how badly Dallas needs Lamb on their team. As mentioned, the running back room is nothing to be impressed by. Aside from Lamb, the Cowboys do not really have a reliable wide receiver, unless one is confident in Brandin Cooks.
It is getting to the point where Jones is running out of excuses. He needs to get this deal done.
