The Dallas Cowboys have already solved one of the most burning questions regarding their roster for the 2024 NFL season. By agreeing to a massive four-year $136 million contract with CeeDee Lamb, they have ensured that their wide receiver room has its best player and Dak Prescott’s top target.
However, with the deadline to trim the roster from 90 to 53 players today, more decisions need to be made, and some of them will be difficult.
Earlier today, one of those difficult decisions was announced regarding defensive end Carl Lawson, who signed with the Cowboys just last week.
The Dallas Cowboys Have Released Defensive End Carl Lawson
According to Todd Archer, who covers the Cowboys for ESPN, Dallas has released Carlson, but may have hope to bring him back onto their pracitice squad:
The Cowboys have released veteran DE Carl Lawson, who joined them late in training camp, per sources. Could potentially return to the practice squad. There was no guaranteed money in the one-year deal he signed.

Carlson is coming off an injury-plagued season in 2023 with the New York Jets that limited him to just six games. He did not record a single sack in those games.
In 2022, his first season in New York, Lawson played all 17 games and had 7.0 sacks.
Lawson previously played for the Cincinnati Bengals, with whom he had 20.0 sacks in four seasons. His best year there was his rookie season in 2017 when he had 8.5 sacks, so far, the highest single-season total of his career.
Unfortunately, he struggled with injuries for much of his time there.
Carl Lawson Had Said Signing with the Dallas Cowboys Made Him Feel Younger
After signing with the Cowboys last week, Carlson told the media, “I honestly feel like a younger player. My potential I honestly feel hasn’t been reached due to injuries or situations or teams that I’ve been on that just haven’t clicked or had quarterbacks playing, whether they’re hurt or just been on down offenses. I’ve been a very effective pass rusher in this league, but on losing teams.
“So the opportunity to possibly get on a team that can be up in games and I really can show my ability. And finally just get back and I’m healthy, so I’m excited. “… I’m just humbled and excited to be here and get to work. I’ve been in the game for a long time, but I do feel like a younger player, I just have never been able to put it all together.
“I know how talented I am and I just want to keep working and be able to bring that to an organization to win, and bring a Super Bowl back to Dallas.”
Hopefully, for Carlson, this decision was made because of how short of a time he has spent with the team in training camp. Perhaps starting the season on the practice squad will help him get up to speed on the playbook and into good condition before he is called upon again.
