The Dallas Cowboys are notorious for not being very active in free agency. But, that does not mean they should turn a blind eye when a great opportunity arises. Well, it appears they had the opportunity to sign future Hall of Fame defensive end Von Miller, but they decided to go cheap.
Miller said in a recent interview, “I told them I was ready to come to the Cowboys. I would have taken less to go to Dallas because it’s Dallas. But I wouldn’t take that much less.” That is clearly what Cowboys fans do not want to hear. After losing Randy Gregory, they could have signed Miller but now they have a void to fill at edge rusher.
Von Miller said he would have “taken less” to come to Dallas
For those wondering, Miller also said the Cowboys offered him the same deal they offered Gregory before he left for the Broncos. That deal was 5 years/ $70 million. Miller ended up signing a 6-year/ $120 million deal with the Bills. He gets $20 million a year to play for Buffalo, while Dallas would only give him $14 million a year.
Based on those numbers it was a no-brainer for Miller to sign with the Bills. It just makes you wonder if the Cowboys would have given him $17-18 million per year if he would have signed. The Cowboys’ front office seems rather incompetent when it comes to signing other teams’ free agents. They freed up all this money during the off-season only to not use any of it. Dallas still has $20 million in cap space, but at this point, it seems unlikely they will sign anyone else.
The 33-year-old pass rusher is coming off a season where he recorded 9.5 sacks. He has had at least eight sacks every year since 2014. Despite his age, Miller can still get to the quarterback at a high level and the Cowboys will have to watch him do that in Buffalo.
