The Dallas Cowboys are going “all in” for the 2024 season according to owner Jerry Jones, but every move — or lack thereof — has pointed toward the exact opposite approach.
After three-straight 12 win seasons, the Cowboys had yet another disappointing early exit from the playoffs and there is a sense around the NFL if this group — with plenty of talent on both sides of the ball — can’t make a significant playoff run in 2024 Jones may have to hit the reset button and start fresh.
He specifically didn’t pick up the 5th-year option for head coach Mike McCarthy, so there isn’t a coach heading into 2024 with higher expectations.
Almost everyone around the league believed Jones would reach a contract extension with Dak Prescottt. which would benefit the Dallas Cowboys in a major way as they struggle to find cap space to add new talent, but as of now, a deal hasn’t been inked and it doesn’t appear the two sides are close.
The Cowboys have added just one free agent this offseason so far, while losing core pieces like tackle Tyron Smith, WR Michael Gallup, RB Tony Pollard and LB Leighton Vander-Esch to name a few.
Unless the Dallas Cowboys have a masterful plan to hit on big-time players in the NFL Draft, it’s hard to see Prescott thriving with less weapons, less protection and a defense that lost its coordinator, key position coaches and a few major role players.
While Dallas still has their two biggest stars on both sides of the ball in CeeDee Lamb and Micah Parsons, this isn’t a team that can just sit back without making any offseason moves and hope for the best.
Prescott had a stellar regular season in 2023, but he’s always been the best with a reliable tight end (which he has), a true No. 1 WR (Lamb) and a dynamic running back who can make defenders miss, set up deep shots through the play action game and also catch passes as a receiver out of the backfield.
Ezekiel Elliot filled that role for a long time, and while Pollard was better splitting time with Elliot than carrying the load as the No. 1 guy last season, he still played a major role in the Dallas Cowboys’ success in 2023.
There’s been a ton of speculation on how Dallas will fill the void at running back with names like Saquon Barkley and Derrick Henry — who were both rumored as potential targets — now off the board. The second wave of starting-caliber backs like Josh Jacobs, Aaron Jones and D’Andre Swift are also now with new teams.
Dallas Cowboys Linked To Baltimore Ravens RB Jk Dobbins Who Could Be Ideal Fit
Deuce Vaughn and Rico Dowdle are currently the top two running backs on the Cowboys’ roster and that is not something the fan base wants to see by the time the regular season begins.
Ever since Ezekiel Elliott began his decline and eventual departure, the Dallas Cowboys have been trying to fix their running back situation. Now, as we approach yet another NFL Draft, the Cowboys, who have just signed Rico Dowdle, now have to find another running back for their roster.
Bleacher Report’s Alex Ballentine has a suggestion in mind and it’s free agent running back JK Dobbins, the former second-round pick from the Baltimore Ravens.
Dobbins exploded out of his shell as a rookie in 2020, rushing for 805 yards, scoring nine touchdowns, and averaging six yards per carry.
When he’s healthy, he has the tools and skillset to be a true elite NFL running back, but injuries have complicated his young career.
JK Dobbins had a season-ending knee injury in 2021 and complications essentially derailed 2022 and 2023. He appeared in just one game this past year.
The former Ohio State standout, who rushed for just 22 yards last year, could see a resurgence with the Dallas Cowboys and being in the same backfield as Dak Prescott.
At this point, he feels like the perfect back Dallas could sign to a team-friendly deal and the upside should be intriguing for Jerry Jones and company.
Baltimore Ravens’ 2020 second-rounder J.K. Dobbins could be a good fit for what the Dallas Cowboys are trying to do on offense
