The Dallas Cowboys have housed a top-ten scoring offense four times since the 2018 season, the first since drafting wide receiver Michael Gallup in the third round of the NFL draft. Gallup played a significant role with Dallas during that stretch, starting 67 of a possible 86 games. However, after accumulating 266 catches in six seasons, the Cowboys released the Colorado State product this offseason. Gallup signed a one-year deal with the Las Vegas Raiders post-Cowboys, but on Tuesday, he made a shocking revelation about his future.
According to NFL insider Ari Meirov, Gallup retired from the NFL on Tuesday, marking the end of his five-year professional career. Gallup’s announcement left Cowboys fans stunned, with many taking to Twitter with the intent to share their thoughts.
Dallas Cowboys Fans: React to Michael Gallup News
With NFL training camp getting underway, former Dallas Cowboys receiver Michael Gallup stole the headlines on Tuesday with his retirement announcement. Gallup signed a one-year, $3 million deal with the Las Vegas Raiders this offseason but did not make it to the start of the season. Naturally, Cowboys fans were startled by the move, with the 28-year-old less than a year removed from his final season with the team.
Cowboys fans flooded Twitter, remembering Gallup’s impact on the NFC East club from 2018 to 2023. Gallup was a mainstay in Dallas’ lineup for six seasons, including recording a healthy 57 receiving yards per game across five playoff games.

Former Cowboys receiver Michael Gallup is retiring from the NFL. Gallup signed with the Raiders as a free agent. The kid went through a lot and played with a lot of joy to open his career. I hope he is happy.

Gallup: Longtime Dallas Cowboys Contributor
The 81st overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, Michael Gallup posted 33 receptions, 507 yards, and two touchdowns in his inaugural season with the Dallas Cowboys. Gallup posted career numbers in 2019, tallying 66 receptions for 1,107 yards and six touchdowns. The Georgia native again performed well in 2020, snagging 59 passes for 843 yards and five touchdowns across 16 games. However, injuries began to limit him during the following seasons. From 2021 to 2022, Gallup played in only 23 of a possible 34 games. Gallup suffered a calf injury and torn ACL during that span but signed a five-year, $62.5 million offer in 2022.
Gallup returned to full health in 2023, registering 34 receptions for 418 yards and two touchdowns in 17 games. He played a reserve role behind fellow pass-catchers CeeDee Lamb, Brandin Cooks, and Jalen Tolbert. Gallup finished his NFL career with an epic performance, posting a six-catch, 103-yard effort in the playoffs against the Green Bay Packers.
