The Dallas Cowboys fell short, once again, of their ultimate goal: winning the Super Bowl. Despite their loss in the NFC Playoffs to San Francisco 49ers, there is a belief that the team is not that far away from achieving that goal. Fortunately for Mike McCarthy and Jerry Jones, defensive coordinator Dan Quinn is staying put. Quinn has made the Cowboys’ defense one to be reckoned with and has helped develop young stars like Micah Parson. Quinn also has a long history with eight-time Pro Bowler Bobby Wagner, who was recently released by the Los Angeles Rams.
Bleacher Report Names the Dallas Cowboys as a Potential Landing Spot for Bobby Wagner
Francisco Rosa of Bleacher Report wrote an article in which he identified three potential landing spots for Wagner. All three teams made the NFC Playoffs last season, and Dallas was at the top of his list:
“The thought of a defense anchored by Micah Parsons and Bobby Wagner is a scary one. And it wouldn’t be that unlikely of an outcome considering the organization’s interest in Wagner last offseason.
“While Jerry Jones didn’t lock down the star last year, he may need to this offseason if Dallas is going to remain an elite defensive unit.
“The Cowboys have three impending free agents at linebacker: Leighton Vander Esch, Anthony Barr and Luke Gifford.
“Vander Esch and Barr combined for 89 solo tackles in 2022. If either one departs in free agency, linebacker would become a position of need for Dallas. And who better to fill that kind of void than Wagner.
“Another reason Wagner would be a good fit is Dan Quinn, Dallas’ defensive coordinator who won the Super Bowl with Wagner in Seattle working the same role. Wagner is familiar with the type of defense that Quinn wants to run and would fit in seamlessly.”
A defense led by a combination of Parsons and Wagner would truly be one that could strike fear into any offense week in and week out. Rosa brought up excellent points regarding the Cowboys’ need for linebackers given how many free agents they have at the position and Jerry Jones’ previous interest in Wagner.
Most importantly, however, is the fact that Wagner knows what it takes to win a Super Bowl in a Dan Quinn defense. The Cowboys could certainly benefit from having a player who has experienced what it takes to elevate a defense to its highest potential.
Bobby Wagner Did Not Show Any Signs of Slowing Down
Despite playing in his age 32 season with the Los Angeles Rams last season, Wagner did not show any signs of slowing down. He had yet another 100+ tackle season, recording 140 tackles and a career-high 6.0 sacks. While he was not named to the Pro Bowl for the first time since 2013, Wagner posted a career-low 1.4% missed tackle percentage and was named Second-Team All-Pro.
Wagner was a bright spot on what turned out to be a disappointing Rams team. The Cowboys would be wise to jump back on the Wagner Wagon again and bring him to Dallas.
