“That’s Not Realistic”: Jerry Jones on What He Truly Feels About Trade Deadline for Cowboys

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has tempered expectations for a major trade ahead of the NFL’s trade deadline, emphasising practicality over flashy moves. While the team has been linked to rumours surrounding star players like Maxx Crosby, Jones has made it clear that any potential deal must align with the team’s long-term goals and financial plans.

The Cowboys, currently sitting at 3-3-1, find themselves in a critical position in the NFC East. Despite Dak Prescott’s strong performances, the team’s defence has struggled following the offseason trade of Micah Parsons. Fans have called for reinforcements, particularly on the defensive side, but Jones has cautioned against making hasty decisions based on short-term momentum.

Jones has stressed the importance of balance when evaluating trade opportunities. While he acknowledges the team’s strong position in terms of draft capital and salary cap flexibility, he has dismissed the idea of gathering talent just for the sake of it. He insists that any move made must not only improve the team this season but also align with their future roster-building strategy.

Rumours of Dallas targeting players like Crosby have added intrigue to the trade deadline, but insiders have reported that the Raiders are not actively shopping their star defensive end. This has left fans wondering whether Dallas will aim for a smaller deal or stand pat altogether. Meanwhile, Jones has reiterated the need for a measured approach, avoiding moves that could jeopardise the team’s future.

Jones recently shared his thoughts about the upcoming trade deadline and what it means for Dallas. This can be seen in a post shared by Jon Machota on X.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones on @1053thefan on the trade deadline: “If there were a trade it will be because it fits us. And to fit, there’s got to be a reason why the player would leave that we’re interested in going forward with, and it would have to fit us in terms of our plans on our roster, the financial and everything that goes with that.

“Just because we played well, all of a sudden everybody thinks, boy, you’re in the hunt, so it’s time to go out and gather up all of this talent that’s waiting around out here on the trees to add to it now that we feel good that we can be more competitive. That’s not realistic. What’s realistic is that if we do see an opportunity, we are in as good a shape as we’ve been in in years with (draft) picks, with financial with our (salary) cap, we’re in as good of shape as we’ve ever been if we see a way to improve our team with a player that makes sense today, this year, next year to entertain it and look at it..”

As the November 4 trade deadline approaches, the Cowboys face tough decisions about improving their roster. With a manageable schedule ahead, the team may look to rely on internal development rather than external additions.

Jones has made it clear that while the team remains open to trades, any move must fit its long-term vision. Fans hoping for a blockbuster deal may need to temper expectations as Dallas focuses on sustainable success.
