The recent trade of George Pickens from the Pittsburgh Steelers to the Dallas Cowboys has generated considerable discussion among analysts, particularly regarding its implications for both teams. ESPN provided grades for the deal, highlighting the potential benefits and risks involved.

The Cowboys acquired Pickens in exchange for a 2026 third-round pick and a 2027 fifth-round pick, along with a sixth-round pick from the Steelers. For Dallas, this trade addresses a long-standing need for a reliable second receiver alongside CeeDee Lamb. Pickens, known for his speed and ability to stretch the field, fits well into the team’s offensive scheme. Analysts noted that he could significantly enhance Dak Prescott’s options, especially after the team struggled with depth at the wide receiver position last season.

However, the move is not without its concerns. ESPN pointed out that Pickens has faced challenges regarding his maturity and discipline on the field. His past incidents, including penalties that raised eyebrows, indicate that Dallas is taking a calculated risk by acquiring him. If he can harness his talent and channel it productively, he may become a key asset for Dallas.

On the other side, the Steelers benefit from this trade by gaining valuable draft capital. Having already secured DK Metcalf earlier in the offseason, Pittsburgh was in a position to move on from Pickens, who had become a source of drama and uncertainty. By trading him away, the Steelers can focus on building a more cohesive receiving corps for their future quarterback, whether that be Aaron Rodgers or another option.

The Pickens trade didn’t really move the needle that much for Dallas. This is detailed more in an analysis by Seth Walder for ESPN.

    Grade for the Cowboys: B-

So, on paper, this move makes plenty of sense for the Cowboys. As poorly as 2024 went for this team, the roster still has the same core as the one that went 12-5 in 2023 (albeit with a different coach) and had a major weakness at receiver after Lamb. To give up a shade more than a third-round pick for one year of Pickens is reasonable, considering how much less it will cost the Cowboys (under $3.4 million) than if he were on the open market.

The grades for this trade reflect a balanced perspective: ESPN awarded Dallas a B- and the Steelers a B+. While the Cowboys solidify their receiving options, the Steelers position themselves for future success by accumulating picks. This trade marks a significant shift for both franchises, altering their trajectories as they head into the coming season.

Ultimately, the Pickens trade serves as a pivotal moment for both the Cowboys and Steelers. As Dallas looks to enhance its playoff chances, Pittsburgh aims to rebuild and strengthen its roster for the future, making this trade a notable move in the NFL landscape.
