“Dallas Needs All the Defensive Help It Can Get”: Cowboys’ 2026 Breakout Candidate Revealed

DeMarvion Overshown is emerging as the Dallas Cowboys’ breakout candidate for 2026 after a season interrupted by serious knee injuries. Analysts point to his athletic profile and flashes of impact when healthy as reasons why he could become a defensive cornerstone.

Overshown returned late in 2025 and posted solid per‑snap production across limited duty, illustrating the sideline‑to‑sideline range that made him a high draft pick. His PFF grades across run defense, coverage and pass rush in those snaps suggested a versatile linebacker capable of affecting all three downs.

The Cowboys’ needs at linebacker and across their defense make Overshown’s situation particularly consequential. With several veterans heading toward free agency and the unit’s overall inconsistency last season, Dallas can ill afford to wait for long development timelines; a healthy, ascending Overshown would provide immediate interior speed and playmaking.

Coaching and scheme also favor his growth. The Cowboys installed a new defensive structure and personnel plan that could better leverage Overshown’s traits, pairing him with complementary linemen whose gap control should open running lanes for him to make tackles and create pressure. A full offseason and normal training cycle are expected to restore burst and confidence lost to injury.

Overshown is predicted to emerge as Dallas’ breakout star next season. This is detailed more in an analysis by Dalton Wasserman for PFF.

Overshown returned from a devastating knee injury that ended his 2024 season to produce a respectable 67.4 PFF overall grade across 218 snaps in 2025. Dallas has now seen nearly 1,000 snaps of solid play from Overshown across his first two seasons. Dallas needs all the defensive help it can get, and the team should be able to rely on a healthy Overshown to improve the unit in 2026.

Risk remains a central caveat. Overshown’s injury history is significant and availability will be the baseline test of any breakout. The Cowboys and their medical staff must carefully manage his workload, monitor recovery markers and structure a gradual ramp in offseason work to minimize the chance of recurrence. That means tailored strength and conditioning, controlled contact in training camp and a snap‑count plan early in the season while he rebuilds full game durability.

If Overshown stays healthy and regains his pre‑injury explosiveness, the upside is considerable. His sideline‑to‑sideline range, coverage ability and pass‑rush flashes could give Dallas a dynamic inside presence capable of forcing offenses into uncomfortable decisions. That production would validate the team’s investment in youth and reduce pressure on other defensive additions the roster may pursue.

The coming offseason will be decisive. Medical evaluations, a productive training program and comfort within the new coaching scheme will determine whether promising tape becomes sustained performance. Availability and consistent play will ultimately decide Overshown’s trajectory, but current metrics and film provide a clear reason for cautious optimism. For a Cowboys defense seeking revival, a healthy, impactful Overshown would be the most encouraging development of the offseason.
