The Dallas Cowboys have been trying to capture their sixth Lombardi Trophy for nearly three decades. Entering the 2024 season, Dallas fans are ready to see their team take the next step. Dallas is coming off three straight seasons in which they won 12 regular season games but failed to reach the conference championships.
The Steelers are starting over at the quarterback position, but they’re doing so with higher than normal expectations. Pittsburgh’s coaching staff hopes that Russell Wilson and Justin Fields can hit the ground running and immediately make them Super Bowl contenders.
However, a feud between the two historic organizations could be forming.
Dallas Cowboys Coach Took A Dig At Pittsburgh Steelers QB
In Week 5, the Pittsburgh Steelers and Dallas Cowboys will renew their rivalry, which has included three Super Bowl matches. This time, it will feature a new storyline focusing on Steelers quarterback Justin Fields.
According to The Minnesota Star Tribune, Cowboys defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer took aim at the signal caller:
On September 1, The Star Tribune’s Mark Craig detailed the fractured relationship Zimmer, the head coach of the Minnesota Vikings for eight seasons, has with former Vikings general manager Rick Spielman. Craig wrote the fallout between the two men began during the 2021 NFL draft.
Fields went in the first round of that draft. Zimmer told Craig that Spielman wanted the Ohio State product while he didn’t.
“I walk in before the draft and Rick is watching quarterback interviews from the combine,” Zimmer told Craig. “He hadn’t told me anything. Normally, he always kept me abreast of everything. And he and I were always good.”
As Zimmer continued to tell his side of the story, he took a dig at Fields.
“The first round, Rick tried to trade up for Justin Fields, who hasn’t done anything.”
Not everyone agrees with Zimmer’s comments regarding Fields. Vikings fan Mike Florio disagreed with Zimmer, according to Pro Football Talk:
“It’s unfair and inaccurate for Zimmer to say Fields ‘hasn’t done anything,’” Florio wrote. “He’s a very dangerous runner. He’s developing as a passer. He could end up being the starter in Pittsburgh, at some point this season.”
The Cowboys open up their season this Sunday when they travel to Cleveland to take on the Browns. They will travel to Pittsburgh on October 6th for Sunday Night Football to renew their rivalry with the Steelers.
