The Dallas Cowboys and Jerry Jones have been synonymous with one another for more than three decades. Jones took ownership of the Cowboys in 1989 and hasn’t looked back.
However, a recent comment about his future with the team has raised some eyebrows.

Fans who want Cowboys owner Jerry Jones to resign as the team’s general manager will certainly find his remarks fascinating:
Jerry Jones is one of the most polarizing owners in professional sports, largely due to his refusal to remove himself from the GM chair. Jones made himself the president and GM after purchasing the Cowboys in 1989, and his refusal to relinquish any of that power was a key factor in Jimmy Johnson’s ugly split from the team in 1994.
Speaking to reporters at training camp on Monday, Jones admitted that he has considered stepping down as GM, per Cowboys reporter Jon Machota of The Athletic.
“Yes, momentary. Small fractions of seconds,” Jones said.
It’s not quite the answer that disgruntled Cowboys fans want to hear, but it’s compelling enough that he publicly admitted to considering it. This is one of the most stubborn figures in the NFL, after all.

Though Jerry Jones has done well at the draft table (especially in round one) as the GM, his coaching hires and incomprehensible patience with former HCs like Jason Garrett and Mike McCarthy have been problematic for a while now.
Jones knows how to build a good roster, yes. But he kept Garrett around for 10 seasons despite winning just two playoff games in that period. McCarthy got five years with a single postseason win.
He stunned fans further by promoting offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer to the HC role, even though McCarthy held play-calling duties over the last two years.
Unless you’re in Jones’ inner circle, it’s hard to come up for a case for the 82-year-old to remain the GM chair. Dallas’ lack of playoff success since 1996 has been well-documented, and it’s because Jones won’t change how he conducts business. It’s his way or the highway.
