Dak Prescott and the Dallas Cowboys had a major opportunity to make a massive statement in Week 9 when they took on the division rival Philadelphia Eagles. Unfortunately, they ended up just short of making that statement and lost by a final score of 28-23. The Cowboys had a great opportunity to win the game late, but CeeDee Lamb fumbled just a few yards away from the end zone to seal the loss for Dallas.
With the loss, the Cowboys ended up dropping to 5-3 on the season. While they are still viewed as a potential Super Bowl contender, there are legitimate concerns about whether or not they can truly compete with the NFL’s elite teams.
Following the disappointing defeat, Prescott spoke out and revealed a brutal one-word response to losing to the Eagles.
“Damn,” Prescott told reporters on November 5, 2023 when asked about his response to the late-game potential scoring plays being overturned.
He went on to open up more about the loss and how the game ended.
“Game of inches, honestly. I mean, game of inches. The first one to Scoon [tight end Luke Schoonmaker], I guess, was the first one. A great catch by him. That’s first [thing] that would hit my mind. Great catch, way to compete. Way to go get that ball. It was crazy his knee was down a little early. Tough, it’s a game of inches honestly. And then on mine, really just mad at myself [for] not just tacking the pylon earlier with two hands. Dived and thought I kind of had it.”
What’s Next For The Dallas Cowboys?
After their Week 9 loss to the Eagles, the Cowboys have a lot of work to do to get back to the level of hype that they had been receiving. The two legitimate Super Bowl contenders they have played this season are the Eagles and San Francisco 49ers and the Cowboys have lost both of those games.
While there is no question about the level of talent that Dallas has on its roster, there are questions about whether or not they’re able to perform in the biggest games.
A big factor in whether the Cowboys can compete for a Super Bowl will be the play of Prescott. Can he rise to the occasion and power the team to wins over elite opponents? He’s shown the potential to do so, but can he do it consistently enough to lead a Super Bowl run?
Mike McCarthy is another big-time factor in all of this equation. Many believe that he is not the kind of head coach that can lead the Cowboys to the Super Bowl. He has certainly been out-coached on many different occasions against elite opponents, such as the 49ers and Eagles.
There are many different variables that will decide what happens for the Cowboys. However, there are reasons for concern and things that need to be fixed in the next few weeks for Dallas to make the run that they’re capable of making.
Expect to continue seeing a ton of pressure come down on the Cowboys in the coming weeks. All eyes are on them and they have brought a lot of that on themselves with big-time talking about their early-season success. It will be interesting to see what they have in store to bounce back from their tough loss against Philadelphia.
