The Dallas Cowboys need some wide receiver depth. Michael Gallup is expected to miss the beginning of the regular season. Also, the team lost Amari Cooper and Cedrick Wilson over the offseason. So why not go out and sign a veteran free agent wide receiver? One name that has been linked to Dallas is Julio Jones. The 33-year-old receiver is coming off an injury-riddled season and could come to Dallas on a discount.
The Cowboys have the third-lowest odds to sign Julio Jones
According to Bookies.com, the Cowboys are +550 to land the former All-Pro. With only the Green Bay Packers (+325) and Indianapolis Colts (+350) having lower odds. The chances of Jones playing a full season at this point in his career is probably slim to none. But, the Cowboys just need Jones for the first month of the season. Once Michael Gallup returns, Dallas can try and limit Jones’ snaps and try to keep him healthy throughout the year.
Other than the obvious need at WR for the Cowboys, Jones has connections to the coaching staff. Cowboys’ Defensive Coordinator Dan Quinn used to be his head coach in Atlanta. Quinn could vouch for Jones and his ability to help the offense. The veteran receiver could enter the Cowboys’ facilities and help develop the younger players.
Jones can still play too if he can stay healthy. He is two years removed from a second-team All-Pro season that saw him eclipse 1300 yards. He is a quarterback’s dream with size, speed, and route running all a major part of his game. It remains to be seen if the Cowboys are even interested in Jones. But, if their odds are any indication then the Alabama native could be headed to Texas.

This free agent class may be worse case scenario for a team in the cowboys position. All the players with any talent are coming off injuries and won’t be 100% by the first month. Everyone else is unproven and not a fit for the team needing a deep threat early on. I’d take a chance on Julio and see if he can give us a good 4-5 games before taking a backseat to Gallup lamb and Tolbert for the rest of the year. The cowboys haven’t had a problem with receivers getting open in years, and it’s made Dak’s job much easier. Hopefully the run game can bail us out the first month while the offense gets to 100%
