Is it a possibility that Matt Corral could start week one for the Carolina Panthers?
As it stands right now the starting QB job is up for grabs in Carolina with Sam Darnold and Baker Mayfield both competing for the job.
Before trading for Mayfield the Panthers selected former Ole Miss quarterback Matt Corral with the 94th pick in the NFL draft, making him the second pick in the Panthers draft class.
But where does Matt Corral fall into the mix?
What does Matt Corral bring to Carolina Panthers.
What could make Corral the starter for the Carolina Panthers is his dual threat ability.
At 6’1 210lb Corral is a way better athlete than his competition.
Corral is what a lot of NFL teams are looking for in their starting QB, which is the ability to make plays with their legs.
Which is something Carolina will need with their new constructed o-line.
In his last year at Ole Miss Corral threw for 3349 yards and 20 touchdowns, and rushed for 614 yards and 11 touchdowns.
His most impressive showing of his dual threat ability was in a 38-21 win against Tennessee where he passed for 221 yards while rushing for 195 yards.
Corral’s dual threat ability is going to be something interesting to watch for during camp, but the big question is, will it translate to the NFL?
Matt Corral’s Standing in Carolina
This past Monday Corral finally arrived to camp after him and the Carolina came to an agreement on his rookie deal which is four-year deal worth up to $5,309,898.
With Corrals arrival that makes every quarterback in Carolina present for camp.
Currently Corral sits third on Panthers head coach Matt Rhule’s QB depth chart behind Darnold and Mayfield.
Corral has a tough road ahead to become the Panthers week one starter on Sept 11 against the Cleveland Browns.
Corral enters a tough QB room which features two top three picks from the same class in Darnold and Mayfield, as well as PJ Walker who has been with Rhule since his playing days at Temple.
At his pressor on Tuesday Rhule has already taken a liken to Corral’s work ethic.
“I showed up to the stadium last night, and Matt was in there working out back in Charlotte getting ready”, said Rhule.
Matt Corral’s confidence as Carolina Panther
During his media pressor Tuesday Corral sounded poised and ready to work.
When asked about the reps being split among the quarterbacks Corral sounded and looked confident.
“I just know my mentality never changed and I know that the coaches didn’t want that to happen and I feel like I am in a good spot right now,” said Corral.
While in the pressor Corral made it known he is coming for that QB1 spot.
“I’m going to put my best foot forward and try to compete and get the starting job by any means necessary”, corral said.
As of right now it’s hard to evaluate Corral, but some panther fans are already excited for what’s two come from the Ole Miss product.
Hype-man and brother of Panthers defensive end Brian Burns already sees the potential from Corral.

Corral has a long way to go to get that QB1 job, but the potential to be something special in the NFL is bright for the young quarterback out of Ventura, CA.
