Last year, while Michigan was on its way to winning a National Championship, there was a lot of attention given to Connor Stallions, the lower-tiered staffer who was accused of sign stealing and was accused of even being on the sidelines of Central Michigan likely spying on other opponent sidelines.
The situation blew up and dominated the college football headlines for a few weeks until finally, Michigan officially let Stallions go. Michigan went on to win a National Championship, but there were still questions as to whether there should be any asterisk next to the championship due to the allegations with Stallions as well as ongoing investigations with John Harbaugh.
But what happened with Connor Stallions? For the past few months, he’s been under the radar, but he appears to be returning to the spotlight, at least a little.
In 2023, Michigan got in a lot of trouble for its sign-stealing scandal involving Connor Stallions. The story took the college football world by storm, and for a solid two months, one of the biggest stories was covering this scandal and determining how much, if any, it was affecting the on-field success of Michigan.
Impact of Connor Stallions
In 2023, Michigan got in a lot of trouble for its sign-stealing scandal involving Connor Stallions. The story took the college football world by storm, and for a solid two months, one of the biggest stories was covering this scandal and determining how much, if any, it was affecting the on-field success of Michigan.
There were entire Twitter and YouTube pages dedicated to finding images and video clips of Connor Stallions stealing signs, perhaps the most interesting being a picture of what appears to be Stallions decked out in Western Michigan gear on the sideline watching the Michigan State sideline.
However, the story quickly grew to be much more than Connor Stallions. Soon, former players and media members started claiming that everyone steals signs and that rather than considering it cheating, it is just another tool and strategy to get an edge in the game.
All of that has led to today, where the college football rules committee is getting together and recommending a change to the game to allow quarterbacks to have helmet communications with their coaches, which the NFL has been doing for a few seasons.

Connor Stallions Has a New Job
According to a report by Andrew Graham with On3 Sports, Stallions has accepted a volunteer coaching position with Mumford High School in Detroit, Michigan.
When asked why the team accepted Stallions as a coach, Mumford Head Coach William McMichael shared the following to defend his decision to bring Stallions onto the staff:
“He’s great with the kids, has an outstanding football mind and we’re learning a lot — not just the kids, but the coaching staff…He’s a great addition to what we’re doing. He can help prepare the kids for college. They are learning the lingo, how they practice college and how they break down film, so it gives the kids an advantage.”
On one hand, it isn’t often that a high school gets the chance to have a coach on the sideline who helped coach a National Championship team, but at the same time, the pushback and allegations against Stallions could be something that could potentially hurt any team he helps coach, as well as players that are associated with being coached by him.
