The Washington Commanders have finally come to terms with standout reciever Terry McLaurin, signing him to a three-year $71 million contract extension. The deal settles the impasse between the fourth-year player and his team, which dragged on through their mandatory three-day mini camp.

McLaurin has been one of the few bright spots for the Commanders, breaking 1,000 yards in multiple campaigns. He maintained leadership on and off the field despite an array of different quarterbacks throwing him the ball. The news will certainly be a relief to the Washington fan base. The newly named franchise has been notoriously inconsistent.

Coach Ron Rivera has expressed the importance of the team retaining McLaurin. League sources say the head coach reached out to him personally before the deal was made. Rivera believes the reciever is integral to the offensive game plan, which flowed through McLaurin in countless instances. His new deal will keep him around until at least 2025.

At only 26 years old, the former third round draft pick will continue to be a staple for his organization. He was a steal in the 2019 draft that saw many disappointing recievers drafted ahead of him. One of them was former Ohio State teammate, Parris Campbell. McLauren has only missed three games since entering the league. He has 3,090 yards and 222 receptions in his career so far.

Newly acquired quarterback Carson Wentz will now have many of the weapons he expected to be at his disposal. The Commanders look to improve upon last year’s somewhat dismal season. The team was also able to re-sign veteran running back J.D. McKissic earlier this year. Coach Rivera is optimistic about the familiar options available for the upcoming 2022-2023 season.
