The Washington Commanders are hoping that rookie QB Jayden Daniels will turn around the direction of their franchise. Washington has made the playoffs once since 2016. The fan base is itching for something to look forward to.
Daniels has impressed so far and the excitement can already be felt in Washington, however, there is a concerning report gaining attention across the league.
Washington Commanders QB Jayden Daniels At The Center Of A Gambling Report
According to the NFL, former LSU teammates Jayden Daniels and Malik Nabers “took back” a $10,000 bet on who would win the Offensive Rookie of the Year award after being educated on the league’s gambling policy in “multiple education sessions.”
According to Mark Maske of the Washington Post, Thursday marked the first time the league publicly addressed the case since Nabers confirmed the bet was called off in May:
“They rescinded that bet,” NFL executive vice president of communications, public affairs and policy Jeff Miller said in a video news conference, per Maske.
“The league addressed the matter directly with the NFL Players Association, with the two teams and with the two players to ensure that they understood the policy. They received multiple education training sessions since that time. And…as a result of all the work that went into it, I think we’re comfortable with the resolution.”
ESPN’s John Keim reported details on the initial bet back in May.
“Daniels and Nabers have a bet on who will win the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year, which Nabers first mentioned on “The Pivot” podcast with Ryan Clark. Daniels confirmed the wager during an interview on the “All Facts No Brakes” podcast with Keyshawn Johnson on Wednesday.”
As Maske noted, the NFL is now mandating in-person training for all players on the gambling policy, so Daniels and Nabers certainly aren’t the only ones undergoing training sessions. Per Maske, representatives from the league visited all 32 teams at offseason minicamps and training camps to conduct the sessions.
In addition, coaches, team and NFL staffers, referees and game officials go through the training.
Even though this bet won’t go through, Daniels and Nabers still have a lot of potential and can easily contend for Offensive Rookie of the Year.
With Daniels at quarterback, Washington could get a much-needed boost from the Heisman Trophy winner. With a great offseason and impressive preseason performance against the Houston Texans, Nabers looks like WR1 in New York.
On Sept 8, Daniels and the Commanders travel to Tampa Bay to face the Buccaneers, while the Giants host the Vikings.
