The Colts’ first preseason game is in the books. Indianapolis lost a close game 27-24 in Orchard Park, New York. The game came down to the wire and Bills kicker Tyler Bass made a 46-yard field goal as time expired in the fourth quarter.
In this article, I break down the highs and lows of the game from the Colts’ perspective. Read and enjoy!!
The Highs
Indy’s defense made plays during the game. The Colts’ defense recorded three takeaways. Rodney McLeod had a 12-yard interception, Isaiah Rodgers had a 32-yard interception, and rookie Sterling Weatherford recorded a 1-yard interception. In addition, Indianapolis stopped Buffalo on critical third-downs. The defense kept Indy in the game.
Nick Foles and Sam Ehlinger played well when they were given their opportunities. Foles connected with Indy’s young receivers and tight ends. Foles completed seven passes, threw for 72 yards, and threw a touchdown. Foles also threw an interception.
Ehlinger looked poised in the pocket and operated the offense well. Ehlinger showed his versatility in the passing game and running game. He completed 10 passes, threw for 88 yards, and threw two touchdowns. On the ground, Ehlinger rushed for 24 yards on four carries.
The Lows
During the regular season, Indy is aggressive and goes for it on fourth-down. Frank Reich went for it on fourth-down four times and Indianapolis converted twice. The Colts have to convert on fourth down to stay on the field. Most significantly, the Colts had 16 chances to convert on third-down and only converted six times. Indy’s offense must execute better on third-down to score points and improve on offense during the preseason. In the regular season, converting on critical third-downs keeps scoring drives alive.
Penalties stall drives and Indianapolis committed nine penalties for 67 yards. The Colts have to stay disciplined on both sides of the ball. Hopefully, Indy can clean up the penalties and convert when it matters the most throughout the rest of the preseason.
