Colts Still Strongly Considering Jeff Saturday For Head Coach

Jeff Saturday made a ton of headlines when the Indianapolis Colts chose to fire Frank Reich and hire the former Pro Bowl offensive lineman as their new head coach in the middle of the season. What made the move seem so crazy was the fact that Saturday did not have any prior coaching experience in the NFL or college. He had helped coach some high school football, but the hire was something no one had ever seen before.

Following a disastrous end to the 2022 NFL season for the Colts, a huge coaching search has been underway. Names like Ben Johnson, Shane Streichen, and Rich Bisaccia have all been talked about. There are plenty of other candidates who have been interviewed as well.

A new update has been provided about the Colts’ head coaching search. It sounds like Saturday is still very much in the mix to be hired as the long-term coach in Indianapolis.

Should The Colts Actually Bring Jeff Saturday Back?

Indianapolis would anger a lot of fans by keeping Saturday around. Some would welcome him back with open arms, but the vast majority of fans could not be more frustrated with the way the season ended. Jim Irsay has a big decision on his hands and his friendship with Saturday should not cloud his judgement.

Outside of the coaching search, the Colts have a lot of decisions to make as well. First and foremost, they need to figure out what to do at the quarterback position. Matt Ryan and Nick Foles are clearly not the answer and Sam Ehlinger doesn’t appear to have made a case to be the starter moving forward either.

Thankfully, the Colts did finish low enough to land the No. 4 overall pick. There are many analysts who believe they could look to trade up with the Chicago Bears for the No. 1 overall pick. With that selection, the Colts would likely take Alabama quarterback Bryce Young to rebuild around a rookie quarterback.

Should the Colts choose to go that route, an inexperienced coach like Saturday would make even less sense. Indianapolis should instead look to bring in a proven coach with a good offensive mind to groom the young signal-caller. Or, they could view it as Saturday and the young quarterback growing and learning together.

There are so many directions the Colts could choose to go. At this point in time, Saturday is obviously still an option. Whether or not they bring him back, only time will tell.

To answer the question, should the Colts actually bring Jeff Saturday back? Likely no, but that doesn’t mean much with the way Irsay has run the franchise in recent history.
