The quarterback competition for the Indianapolis Colts has become one of the most intriguing storylines of the preseason. With Anthony Richardson and Daniel Jones vying for the starting role, the team’s decision could significantly impact their upcoming season.

Richardson has shown flashes of brilliance but has struggled with consistency and injuries. Despite his challenges, analysts believe his athleticism and potential give him an edge over Jones. Many expect Richardson to outperform the veteran in training camp and preseason games, showcasing his ability to lead the offense effectively.

Jones, who joined the Colts after a disappointing tenure with the New York Giants, brings experience but limited success as a starter. While his presence provides depth and a safety net for the team, his turnover issues and lack of dynamic playmaking may limit his chances. Still, his familiarity with professional systems makes him a valuable option for stability.

Head coach Shane Steichen has remained noncommittal, listing both players as co-starters on the initial depth chart. Steichen emphasized the importance of consistency, decision-making, and offensive efficiency as key factors in determining the starter. Both quarterbacks are expected to see significant playing time in upcoming preseason matchups, beginning with the Baltimore Ravens.

NFL Analysis Predicts Anthony Richardson to Get Indianapolis Colts’ Starting QB Job

NFL quarterback Anthony Richardson Sr. (5) drops back to pass Wednesday, July 23, 2025, during the first day of training camp held at Grand Park in Westfield.

Richardson may end up becoming Indianapolis starting QB in Week 1 soon. This is detailed more in an analysis by Dan Graziano for ESPN.

Week 1 starter prediction: Richardson. I know Jones appears to have taken over the No. 1 spot on the depth chart after Richardson’s spring injury, but training camp is where Richardson looks the best — if he’s healthy, he’s likely to outperform Jones on the practice field.

The Colts also have a lot more invested in Richardson, and if it’s a close competition, most people I talk to believe that will tilt things in his favor — at least to start the season. Whether he can stay healthy enough or play well enough to hold the job is another matter entirely.

Richardson’s offseason improvements, including work on his mechanics and accuracy, have positioned him as the favorite to win the job. His ability to extend plays and create opportunities downfield makes him a more dynamic choice for the Colts’ offense. However, Jones’ reliability could still factor into the team’s decision-making.

As the preseason unfolds, Richardson’s performance will likely solidify his role as the Colts’ Week 1 starter. With his upside and the investment the team has made in his development, he appears ready to take the reins and lead Indianapolis into the season.
