The Indianapolis Colts have had a season to forget. Indianapolis fell to 4-8-1 after losing 54-19 to the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday night football. Colt’s football has been abysmal, disappointing, and frustrating this season. Indianapolis was expected to compete for the super bowl and win the AFC South. Unfortunately, Colt’s football hasn’t met those lofty expectations. Colt’s fans have seen some awful football on Sundays. Indianapolis has blown leads, looked sloppy on offense, and underperformed on multiple occasions.
The season is a wash for Colt’s football and the Colts have to look at the future. Indianapolis has a lot of work to do. I highlight the areas I think are most important for the horseshoe’s future.
Finding a Coach

Frank Reich was the first domino to fall this season. Reich was fired after Indy’s 26-3 loss against New England. The writing was on the wall for Frank Reich and Reich was slowly pushed out of Indy. Reich lost the locker room and his player’s trust. Reich was a good coach, but he couldn’t turn the Colt’s season around. Indianapolis surprisingly hired Jeff Saturday. Saturday beat the Las Vegas Raiders in his coaching debut. Sadly Saturday and the Colts haven’t won a game since.
Coaching is important in the NFL. Players need to be led by a strong coach who can rally the locker room. Indianapolis has to find a coach who can connect with the roster. Indianapolis also has to figure out what they want from the next head coach. The coach has to be strong-minded, intelligent, and a problem-solver. Indy’s coaching search will be under the microscope this offseason.
Establishing an Identity
The Colts haven’t had an identity this season and it has hurt them. Teams have to establish an identity because it helps them win games. Indy’s defense has been good this season. However, the defense hasn’t helped the Colts win multiple games. The offense has been a mess all season and has struggled to stay on the field.
Do the Colts want to be strong on both sides of the ball? Do they want to be a team that plays great defense and not turn the ball over on offense? Do the Colts want to be more of an offensive team? General manager Chris Ballard and Owner Jim Irsay have to figure out what team they want. Ballard and Irsay have a lot of work to do and have to steer Indy in the right direction.
Getting the Quarterback Position Right

Indianapolis’s quarterback of the future isn’t on its roster. The “Colts need a quarterback” has become a cliche and a broken record. The truth is the Colts need a quarterback. Since Andrew Luck reitred Indy has started Jacoby Brissett, Philip Rivers, Carson Wentz, and Sam Ehlinger. Matt Ryan has looked awful under center. Ryan has passed for 2,875 yards, thrown 13 tocuhdowns, and 13 interceptions. The Colts have to find a quarterback who can lead the offense. Indianapolis can’t afford to keep acquiring older quarterbacks who can’t move and lead the offense. Quarterback is the most important position on the gridiron. If the Colts want to succeed they have to find a quarterback.
