Following a miraculous 38-31 overtime win over the Baylor Bears last Saturday, the Colorado football team has won back-to-back games after an abysmal loss on the road against the Nebraska Cornhuskers. Quarterback Shedeur Sanders shined for the Colorado Buffaloes last weekend, going 25-of-41 for 341 yards and two touchdowns. He did not turn the ball over while tossing a game-tying Hail Mary pass to wideout LaJohntay Wester as time expired in regulation.
Sanders has accumulated 1,340 passing yards, 11 touchdowns, and two picks this season, while Colorado football sports a 3-1 record. However, despite his on-the-field accomplishments, Sanders entered last week’s matchup as a significant subject of conversation following an interview with former Heisman Trophy Award winner Robert Griffin III. In the sitdown, Sanders claimed that being an African American quarterback who is the son of NFL Hall of Fame defensive back turned head coach Deion Sanders leads to undeserving criticism. His wording left many fans dumbfounded, expressing their frustration through social media.
Colorado Football’s Shedeur Sanders Draws Ire From Fans
In an interview with former ESPN football personality and analyst Robert Griffin III, Colorado Buffaloes star Shedeur Sanders touched on what it is like being an African American quarterback and the son of team head coach Deion Sanders:
I just accept the reality with everything and just not just being his son, just being an African American quarterback… That’s a double whammy right there… Then, being an African American Quarterback, it’s not many that do that… it’s a strict, narrow line you gotta walk down and be a certain way.
Sanders has long been a polarizing player in college football, owning an NIL valuation of $5.1 million, the highest in collegiate sports. Since the arrival of Sanders, head coach Deion Sanders, and safety Shilo Sanders, Colorado football remains a mainstay on national television. The elder Sanders used the transfer portal to new lengths last season, overhauling the team’s roster at an unprecedented rate.
However, despite bringing relevance to Colorado, a team that went 1-11 before the arrival of the Sanders family in 2022, many fans have grown frustrated with the program. Many of those same fans shifted their crosshairs to Shedeur Sanders last week following his comments regarding being an African American quarterback near the sport’s highest level:
if this was vick about 20-25 years ago it might make sense. curious why being a black qb in 2024 is such a big issue. 3 of the top 4 qbs in the 2024 nfl draft were black. the only 3 qbs selected in 1st rd in 2023 draft were black. what am i missing?
— Ryan Rogers (@_RyRog_) September 18, 2024
Half of nfl qbs are black. Gotta stop with the race baiting
— Crops (@CV_PCA) September 19, 2024
Do you think there’s a possibility they may have drawn some this attention onto themselves? 🤣🤣
— Alex ⚡️ (@Odellbaconjr_) September 18, 2024
imagine still pretending black QBs are unfairly hated on
— SLANDR SZN ☠️ (@im_right_though) September 19, 2024
They are judged because they are cocky, at least that’s true for Shedeur.
— KC Red or Dead (@SeaSkyOutdoors) September 19, 2024
More than half of the starting QBs in the league are African American.
— GZ (@SeattleFanGZ) September 19, 2024
Nobody would know their names if it wasn’t for their dad. It’s HARDLY a disadvantage.
— Jake Knows Ball 🐻⬇️ (@DaBears_26) September 19, 2024
Sorry but the “African American QB thing” is long gone… give that up
— Rob Ryan (@RobRyan68296722) September 19, 2024
What the hell is Shedeur talking about?
Patrick Mahomes
Lamar Jackson
Caleb Williams
Deshaun Watson
Anthony Richards
Jayden Daniels
Dak Prescott
Tua Tagovailoa
Jalen Hurts
Jordan Love
Bryce Young (just benched)
Jacoby Brissett
Geno Smith
Justin Fields
C.J. StroudALL…

15/32 of the week 1 NFL starting QBs were black. Educate yourself my friend.
Haven’t heard any white corners or safeties complain about being perceived as slower or more unathletic due to the color of their skin at that position.
ALL 64 starting corners are black. Harrison…
— Dr. Swap (@Swappenheimer) September 19, 2024
Poor rich kids.
— DC Exile 🇺🇸 (@DC__Exile) September 19, 2024
Lmao, 14 of the 32 starting NFL QB’s are black which is 44%. Black people are only 13% of the population. I’d say that’s OVER representation right there. But it’s never enough; it’s always the perpetual victim card….
— ForgetAboutIt (@strong_side_24) September 19, 2024
we're still doing the black quarterback thing? Half the NFL QBs are black… enough already

End of story
You could keep going. I like Shedeur as a player too, but his statement is undoubtly odd.
If his statement is odd, then you obviously have not heard the undue criticism; if you have heard, then perhaps you may have chalked it up as being normal
There is definitely undue criticism. Also criticism he brings upon himself. He’s a great player who will only get better as well.
You might think his ignorance and ego is because he’s a kid. Its not. Race baiters and divisiveness come in all different ages and colors.
