Colorado football is amid one of their best seasons in recent memory. Failing to win more than five games each season since 2016, the Colorado Buffaloes are 7-2 following their most recent win on the road against a surging Texas Tech Red Raiders squad. Colorado has won six of their last seven, and while they continue to form into a Big 12 contender, other top conference teams have slipped up in recent weeks.
On Saturday, Colorado won their third straight conference game, while the Iowa State Cyclones and Kansas State Wildcats each lost in Big 12 competition, springboarding Colorado football to new heights. Following last weekend’s action, Colorado sits second in the Big 12, while undefeated BYU remains atop the conference standings. With the Buffaloes surging, ESPN FPI has them as one of the top contenders for the College Football Playoff.

On Tuesday, the College Football Playoff will release their most recent standings. However, the ESPN FPI, a “predictive rating method developed by ESPN that calculates team strength and uses it to forecast game and season results,” has already been updated following the conclusion of last weekend. Colorado football only trails the Georgia Bulldogs, Alabama Crimson Tide, and Ole Miss Rebels of the SEC among the two-loss teams. At 27.4%, the Colorado Buffaloes are only behind the BYU Cougars (58.6%) among Big 12 schools with the best odds to make the 12-team postseason field. If the season ended today, Colorado and an undefeated BYU team would battle in the Big 12 title for a bid into the College Football Playoff.
Heading into next weekend, the Buffaloes are the only Big 12 team with just one loss in conference play. Four teams own a conference record of 4-2. Most notably, Kansas State is 4-2 in the Big 12 and beat Colorado head-to-head earlier this season. The coach Deion Sanders-led team will finish the season with matchups between Utah, Oklahoma State, and Arizona. The trio are a combined 2-17 in conference competition.
