College football had a top-five matchup this weekend. In the early slate, The fourth-ranked Ohio State Buckeyes visited the undefeated Penn State Nittany Lions. In the leadup to the highly anticipated college football tilt, the records of each head coach against top-tier competition became a major topic of discussion. Heading into their game against Penn State, OSU head coach Ryan Day was 2-6 against top-five teams while 44-0 against unranked opponents. Meanwhile, PSU’s James Franklin was 1-12 vs. top-five teams, and like his predecessors Bill O’Brien and Joe Paterno, has struggled to vanquish Ohio State.
On Saturday, Penn State’s nightmare performance against AP top-five teams continued, with a 20-13 loss at home against Ohio State. One of college football’s most decorated teams, the Nittany Lions, have yet to do much against top-five opponents. Dating back to the start of the 21st century, Penn State is 1-23 against top-five foes, much to the notice of football fans.
College Football Fans Clown Penn State For Another Top-Five Loss
According to national football writer Chris Hummer:
A few Penn State notes coming out of its loss to Ohio State via the
@CBSSports research team:
– 1-23 vs AP top-5 teams since 2000
– 1-13 vs AP top-5 teams under James Franklin (lost 11 straight)
– PSU has now lost 8 straight games to OSU
Since 2000, Penn State has finished in the AP Poll Top 25 eleven times, won double-digit games eight times, and won eight bowl games. However, they have failed to make a title game or College Football Playoff field, with an ineptitude to beat top five teams, specifically in their conference. On Saturday, boasting a blemish-free 7-0 record, the Penn State Nittany Lions again failed to win against a top-five opponent, this time at home against Ohio State. With the loss, they have dropped eight straight against OSU. Since 2000, they have beaten the Buckeyes just five times, with them holding a top-five ranking just once.
The Nittany Lions emerged victorious in 2016 against the second-ranked Buckeyes via a blocked field goal touchdown in the final minutes. Penn State and head coach James Franklin will enter next weekend with a 7-1 record as they face the Washington Huskies at home. They will also likely debut firmly inside the top 12 spots of the College Football Playoff rankings, keeping their hopes at a national title alive. The Nittany Lions have not won a national championship since 1986 and have not gone undefeated since 1994, their second year in the Big Ten. Nevertheless, with PSU again losing in a top-five game on Saturday, football fans put the program and head coach James Franklin on blast:
And if I recall, wasn’t the last time PSU won, it took a blocked field goal returned for a TD just to beat Ohio State??

I thought Billy Napier was the worst critical down play caller. That title probably goes to James Franklin now.

Absolutely anything can happen when Ohio State and Penn State play. Ohio State could win in a blowout. Ohio State could win in a conventional grindfest. Ohio State could even win off a last second miracle. It’s all on the table!!

Penn State fans go through a hell only few have experienced.
