It just gets crazier and crazier. This final week of college football kept the rollercoaster season going and there have been a lot of loops in this ride. Just this weekend there was a 8 OT game, upsets and even on field fights. Lets get to the stories of the week!
There Were Upsets This Week In Football!
First we will start with the least talked about upset. Memphis upset Tulane on Thanksgiving night 34-24. While Memphis has been on the rise the last few weeks due to the run that Mario Anderson Jr. is having, Tulane was expected to win but couldn’t stop Anderson and the Memphis offense which put up 242 rushing yards as a team. Potential portal target quarterback Darian Mensah did put up 317 yards passing and two touchdowns, but it wasn’t enough. Lucky for Tulane they will face Army for the AAC championship.
One of the biggest ones was of course unranked Michigan beating #2 Ohio State by a score of 13-10. Kalel Mullings was able to grind out 32 carries for 116 yards and a touchdown. The Michigan defense was able to get their hands on the football by getting two picks off Will Howard and also knock away four more. Howard did not play well or look very comfortable. Ohio State’s kicker also missed two field goals that had he made they would have won. There was also almost a fight at midfield when Michigan players attempted to plant their flag on the the Ohio State logo.
Another big upset was #6 Miami losing to an unranked Syracuse 42-38. Cam Ward had his usual game where he threw for over 300 yards and had a couple touchdowns. Kyle McCord though also had one of his big games throwing for 380 yards and three touchdowns. Both teams ran the ball and had two receivers each go over 100 yards. Syracuse came back from being down 21-0 at one point. Safety Devin Grant forced a fumble and returned it for a touchdown and that seems to be the play that ended it.
Georgia beat Georgia Tech which was expected….of course, but the kicker here was the game went into octuple overtime. It went into EIGHTH overtime, just nuts. Georgia won 44-42. What is also crazy is that Georgia was behind by 17 points at the half. Carson Beck went on to throw five touchdowns in this game and Haynes King led the way for Georgia Tech. It took freshman Nate Frasier scoring a two point conversion to end the game.
A probably even lesser known upset was Wyoming beating Washington State 15-14. Washington State was ranked not too long ago. They have lost their last three games though. John Mateer their dual threat quarterback has fallen back to earth. He is still a transfer candidate this offseason. Wyoming won on a late touchdown pass to tight end John Michael Gyllenborg who is a sleeper for the 2025 NFL draft class.
Other Interesting Football Games From The Weekend…
#15 South Carolina won a close one over #12 Clemson 17-14. South Carolina has been on a hot streak the last few weeks with quarterback LaNorris Sellers the catalyst. He rushed for a game high 16 carries for 166 yards and two touchdowns. Speaking of Sellers had a 20 yard touchdowns run with about one minute left to basically end the game. Both Sellers and Cade Klubnik threw a pick and no touchdowns.
Arizona State also blew out Arizona 49-7. While ASU was expected to win, winning by 42 points was a big surprise. Arizona State rushed for over 280 yards with both Cam Skattebo and Kyson Brown rushing for over 100 yards each. Of course Jordyn Tyson also had over 100 yards receiving which seems to have become a weekly occurrence. But all that wasn’t the big story of the game. It was when an ASU lineman took their fork and tried to stab the Arizona logo at midfield which almost caused another fight.
There was also ANOTHER crazy game. Texas took on Texas A&M for state bragging rights and for a chance at the SEC championship. Well…Texas beat them 17-7. Most expected Texas to win since they were the #3 team in the nation and Texas A&M was #20, but also Quin Ewers can be inconsistent so they did have a shot. Marcel Reed did not play well, he had two fumbles, an interception and didn’t throw a touchdown pass. Texas A&M could not get anything going on offense. Their only points were off a 93 yard pick-six from Will Lee III. But as with some of the other games the crazy part is what happened after the game.
A number of Texas players afterwards decided to go out to mid field on the Texas A&M logo and start stomping and kicking it. Of course Texas A&M players took exception to this and another fight almost broke out.
Another interesting game was Colorado’s complete molly whop of Oklahoma State. They beat them by a score of 52-0! Shedeur Sanders threw for 438 yards and five touchdowns. LaJohntay Wester continued his late season climb with 11 catches for 175 yards and two touchdowns. Oklahoma State was still surprisingly able to get six sacks on Sanders.
