Most weeks there seems to be at least one weird loss, but this season there seems to be almost multiple each week. There also seemed to be a number of low scoring games this week. There is no elite team or teams this season.
How Did Our Undefeated Teams Fare This Week?
#1 Oregon has stayed undefeated by beating Wisconsin, but the big story from this game is that Wisconsin definitely made it a game. The final score was just 16-13. Dillon Gabriel was pretty meh. He didn’t throw a single touchdown but did throw a pick. Jordan James scored their only offensive touchdown. Wisconsin didn’t do anything particularly special to keep it so close. They just played solid defense and sniffed out a couple trick plays. Oregon just got a timely turnover to win the game.
the #6 BYU Cougars took on the 3-6 Kansas Jayhawks. It was expected to be an easy win since Kansas had struggled all season. Well….it wasn’t. In fact Kansas beat BYU 17-13. Both offenses struggled. Kansas was able to hold BYU to just a field goal in the second half. Jalon Daniels actually tricked BYU by punting on 4th down, which caused some confusion for BYU and it ended up bouncing off a players helmet that Kansas was able to recover. BYU is now likely out of the college football playoffs.
This leaves Oregon, Army and Indiana as the only undefeated teams left in college football. This also leaves Kent State as the only school still without and win. They are 0-10 and have not won a game since last September.
How Did The Other Top Schools Fare?
#2 Ohio State beat Northwestern 31-7. It wasn’t much of a contest. Ohio State rushed for 173 yards as a team and Jeremiah Smith carried the passing game with 4 catches for 100 yards. #3 Texas beat Arkansas 20-10. Ewers again was kind of just ok. Jaydon Blue and Quintrevion Wisner kept the offense churning. The defense also sacked Taylen Green six times and picked him off once.
The #4 team Penn State also beat Purdue 49-10. Tyler Warren did his thing again. He lead Penn State in rushing and receiving and scored two touchdowns. #12 Georgia and #7 Tennessee went head to head and Georgia came out on top and it wasn’t partially close after the first half with the final score 31-17. Nico Iamaleava still looks like he hasn’t reach his recruiting hype yet and will need a big offseason. Carson Beck had a really solid game. He threw for 347 yards and two TDs and no picks. The Tennessee defense couldn’t get enough stops in the second half and their offense couldn’t generate much.
#8 Notre Dame took care of business against Virginia, winning 35-14. Notre Dame rushed for 235 yards as an offense. The Notre Dame defense also picked off Virginia three times. The score should have been 41-14, but their kickers missed two field goals. #10 Alabama of course beat Mercer 52-7.
We Have A Bunch Of 8-2 Schools….Creating A Log Jam
Arizona State is 8-2, but also unranked. I wouldn’t be surprised if they are ranked come Monday morning. They actually beat #16 Kansas State. Cam Skattebo was back after missing last weeks game. Avery Johnson threw two picks and Sam Leavitt threw three touchdowns. That is pretty much the story of the game. Redshirt Sophmore Jordyn Tyson had a huge game with 12 catches, 176 yards and two TDs.
#17 Colorado also beat Utah, and beat them badly which was a surprise. The final score was 49-24. Issac Wilson throwing three interceptions really hurt them and their running game stalling out. LaJohntay Wester also returned a punt 76 yards for a touchdown. One school in this group that did let down was #18 Washington State losing to New Mexico 38-35. They had no answer for quarterback Devon Dampier as he had 28 carries for 193 yards and three touchdowns. This loss probably drops them from the rankings.
#20 Clemson also survived a close win over Pitt, who started the season 7-0 and have now lost their last three games. As he’s done the last three to four weeks Cade Klubnik did just enough to help keep Clemson winning. He was Clemson’s leading rusher in this game. Nate Yarnell filling in for Eli Holstein threw for 350 yards, but it wasn’t enough. They couldn’t stop Antonio Williams.
Some Interesting Results From This Weekend
#19 Louisville took on Stanford, a Stanford team that had all of two wins. Stanford won 38-35. Tyler Shough and and offense played pretty well, but you can tell by the score the defense did not. They were inconsistent. Stanford won on a 52 yard last second field goal. Their offense went cold and the defense committed some poorly timed penalties.
#21 South Carolina beat #23 Missouri. The story though was LaNorris Sellers throwing for 353 yards and five touchdowns! His previous high was two and the most yardage before this game was 244. Brady Cook played solid and Nate Noel put up 150 yards on the ground. Cook ended up throwing the game ending pick.
The #22 LSU Tigers are in a free fall. They have now lost to the unranked Florida Gators 27-16. Nussmeier definitely needs to go back for another season. Freshman DJ Lagway played well for Florida. The LSU offensive line really struggled giving up seven sacks in the game. LSU plays Vanderbilt this coming weekend and it will be a challenging game.
