We had another crazy week of college football this week. It was a similar week to a couple weeks ago where a number of teams lost that were not expected to. It seems this season of college football has been weirder than any in recent years. Lets get to the stories of the week.
We Have Less Undefeated Football Teams
#4 Ohio State beat previously unbeaten #3 Penn State. It seemed like neither QB seemed to wanted to win. Drew Allar threw for just 146 yards and one interception and Will Howard wasn’t all that much better. Quinshon Judkins drove the train for the OSU offense. The Penn State offense didn’t score a single touchdown. Their only score was a pick-six from Zion Tracy.
Also Texas Tech beat undefeated #11 Iowa State by one point. They scored a touchdown with 24 seconds left. Josh Kelly and Tahj Brooks led the way for Texas Tech. Iowa State played a solid game, but their kicker did miss a field goal that could have been the difference in the football game. Rocco Becht played ok, throwing two touchdowns but also an interception and completed just 58% of his passes.
#20 SMU blew out #18 Pittsburgh, 48-25. Pittsburgh was undefeated entering the game. Eli Holstein played but was sacked three times and threw a pick. SMU’s defense really harassed him, they even batted away 10 passes. Running back Desmond Reid didn’t get much going either. Former wide receiver Brashard Smith rushed for 161 yards and Kevin Jennings threw for 306 yards and two TDs.
And Then There Were…4
#1 Oregon beat Michigan 38-17. Michigan has gone back to former walk-on Davis Warren at quarterback with some what similar results. Although he wasn’t terrible, he wasn’t good enough. Oregon pretty much had their way with Michigan. Dillon Gabriel wasn’t sacked at all. They could go undefeated all the way.
Miami is still undefeated, They beat up Duke 53-31. Maalik Murphy threw 3 TDs but also 3 Picks. 400 yards and 5 touchdowns for Cam Ward. Xavier Restrepo went off for 8 catches for 146 yards. Miami’s offensive line is still having some struggles, but Ward is making them look better than they are. Miami should win their last three games against Wake Forest, Syracuse and Georgia Tech next week.
Army of course is still undefeated. They beat Air Force, 20-3. Air Force was 1-7 entering the game. Army has North Texas next week and they can throw the ball all over the field, but Army could still win. The week after though they have #10 Notre Dame who I expect to end their unbeaten streak if North Texas can’t.
Indiana is still undefeated as well. They beat Michigan State 47-10. Kurtis Rourke was back and was back to his old consistent self, throwing four touchdowns and spreading the ball around. The Indiana defense racked up seven sacks of Aidan Chiles and Tommy Schuster. Nick Marsh looks like their only talented player on offense. Indiana has two upcoming big games against Michigan and Ohio State. They could lose either one.
A Number Of Ranked Teams Lost Or Had Close Calls
#7 Tennessee survived a close first half to Kentucky. Kentucky was actually up 10-7 at the half, but ended 28-18. Solid game for Nico Iamaleava. He threw for 292 yards and a touchdown. Dylan Sampson delivered for the offense though carrying the ball for 142 yards. Tennessee’s kicker also missed three field goals which also made the game look closer, but could affect them in a close game later on.
Unranked Louisville beat #11 Clemson. 33-21. Isaac Brown rushed for 151 yards and a touchdown. Phil Mafah also rushed for 171 yards and 2 TDs. Tyler Shough didn’t have to do much for Louisville completing just 53% of his passes. The Louisville defense was all over Cade Klubnik knocking away nine passes and pressuring him all throughout the game.
#10 Texas A&M got hammered by unranked South Carolina, 44-20. LaNorris Sellers did it on the ground and air. 15 carries for 106 yards and a TD, he also passed for 244 yards and 2 touchdowns. Rocket Sanders also rushed for 144 yards. Marcel Reed was forced to be a passer in this game and he struggled. South Carolina was also in the backfield all game. A&M should win their next couple games, but have a big one against Texas for their last game.
Unranked Houston beat #17 Kansas State. 24-19. DJ Giddens was held in check, rushing for just 50 yards. Houston really got after KSU and their run game. Zeon Chriss lead Houston to the win rushing for 75 yards and a TD. Avery Johnson was forced to be a passer and struggled, throwing two picks. Houston’s punter also forced Kansas State to drive the length of the field on at least five of their drives.
#2 Georgia barely hung on against Florida, winning 34-20. Florida was up 13-6 at halftime. Carson Beck threw two TDs, but also three picks. Beck has already thrown 11 picks this year and is trying to force too many plays and is part of the reason for their struggles on offense. DJ Lagaway gave them a game until he got injured. Florida was able to run the ball against them pretty effectively as well.
Interesting Stories From This Week Of Football
After a fast start and looking like a team that could contend Nebraska, has lost their last 3 games. They just lost 27-20 to a poor UCLA team. The passing and rushing game have not fared well. Dylan Raiola looks like he still needs time and will need a big offseason if they want to contend in 2025.
Navy second loss to Rice. 24-10. Connors rushes for 105, 2 TDs
Savion Williams is now pulling double duty for TCU. He is playing both running back and wide receiver. This past Saturday he had 8 carries for 57 yards and 8 catches for 92 yards. USC lost to Washington. 26-21. Miller Moss threw 3 picks and the defense has not played well. They are now 4-5 with Nebraska, UCLA and Notre Dame left on their schedule. They probably lose to Notre Dame and could lose to UCLA since record is always out the door when those two play. Lincoln Riley will be on the hot seat in 2025.
Iowa dominated Wisconsin 42-10. Kaleb Johnson hammered them for 156 yards and 3 TDs. Wisconsin has been a Jekel and Hyde team all season. UCF running back RJ Harvey had 22 carries for 184 yards and 3 TDs. It seems week in, week out he performs no matter how the rest of his team plays. He already has 1,200 yards on the season
North Carolina’s Omarion Hampton was their leading rusher and receiver in their win over Florida State. He had 32 carries for 172 yards and four touchdowns! but also caught three passes for 93 yards and a touchdown.
Illinois lost for the 2nd week on a row after a undefeated start to their season. They lost to Minnesota, 25-17. Both teams played well for the most part. Neither quarterback played great, it just seems the ball didn’t bounce Illinois way. #15 Boise blew out SDSU, 56-24. Heisman candidate Ashton Jeanty rushed for 149 yards and 2TDs. He is up to 1,525 yards rushing and an astounding 20 rushing touchdowns.
