On Saturday, only one ranked college football team lost, with the No. 24 ranked Boston College Eagles falling short to the No. 6 Missouri Tigers 27-21. The top-ranked Georgia Bulldogs survived a scare against Kentucky, Michigan football bounced back with a double-digit win over Arkansas State, and the Alabama Crimson Tide crushed the usually formidable Wisconsin Badgers on the road.
In the later games, the No. 6 ranked Ole Miss Rebels blew the doors off the Wake Forest Demon Deacons 40-6. Following the loss, Wake Forest called it quits against one of college football’s best teams, canceling next year’s matchup against Ole Miss. The ACC club will not fulfill their agreement to play a home and home against Ole Miss, paying a $1 million cancellation fee to break the contract.
SEC-ACC 2025 College Football Matchup Cancelled
According to college football insider Brett McMurphy of the Athletic:
Wake Forest cancels 2025 game at Ole Miss, buying out of 2nd game in home/home series. Wake Forest must pay $1 million cancellation fee. Ole Miss won at Wake 40-6 Saturday.
On Saturday, the Wake Forest Deamon Deacons got run 40-6 at home against the Ole Miss Rebels. In what many pundits believed would become a high-scoring college football tilt, Wake Forest totaled just 311 yards of offense. Meanwhile, they coughed up 655 yards to Ole Miss, with Rebels star rusher Henry Parrish scampering for 148 yards and two touchdowns on 23 carries. Ole Miss outscored Wake Forest 17-0 in the second half, and with Saturday’s win, will move to 3-0 on the young season. Meanwhile, Wake Forest sits at 1-2 and will enjoy a much-needed bye next weekend before hosting the Lousiana Rajin’ Cajuns in late September.
The dominant performance by Ole Miss will have a ripple effect on the 2025 college football season, with Wake Forest canceling the rematch next fall. To lighten their 2025 non-conference schedule, Wake Forest will pay a $1 million cancellation fee to bow out of traveling to Oxford, Mississippi, the final leg of the home-and-home series.
