In Ole Miss’ dominant win over Georgia State, defensive end Da’Shawn Womack was galvanized by a bizarre pregame incident involving defensive back Tyler Scott:
The No. 15 Rebels beat the Panthers 63-7 on Aug. 30. Speaking in a media call on Aug. 31, Ole Miss coach Lane Kiffin said that Scott started a fight with Womack by ripping a chain off Womack’s neck when they were on the field warming up.
“It was wild,” Kiffin said. “I thought our guys handled it really well. Probably better than I would have in that situation. That was crazy. I’ve never seen anything like that. And I didn’t even know who the guy (Scott) was at the time.”
Kiffin said Scott taunted Womack with the chain before throwing it into the stands. Kiffin himself exchanged words with Scott after the altercation.
“Complete disrespect,” Kiffin said. “You guys hear me say all the time, everything bad is good and everything good is bad. It pissed Womack off. He was the defensive player of the game. Played amazing and as hard as he could in the game.”

Womack’s anger translated to the stat sheet. He had six tackles in his debut for the Rebels (1-0), also recording a tackle for loss. Scott did not play for Georgia State (0-1).
Womack chose to settle the score on the field when police presented him with another option. He eventually got the chain back.
“They asked him if he wanted to press charges,” Kiffin said. “He said, ‘No, I’d rather let the guy play.’ “
