This weeks slate of games were definitely an adventure. We have late controversial wins, blow outs, big rushing games, big passing games and big defensive games. We had a bit of everything. First things first, lets get to that controversial game…..
Miami Is Undefeated…Or Is It?
The first game of the week was a barn burner. Miami beat Virginia Tech late 38-34. Virginia Tech had the lead going into the fourth quarter, but Miami took the lead in the fourth. With about three seconds left in the game, on the final play of the game Kyron Drones seemed to have accomplished the impossible and threw a hail mary to DaQuan Felton. It was originally ruled a touchdown, but after a long review ruled it incomplete. The ACC later stated it was ruled incomplete because it touched a Miami player that was out of bounds.
Cam Ward had a huge game with 343 yards and four TDs, but also two picks. At this point he is one of the leading contenders for the Heisman. Despite being now 2-3 Virginia Tech has lost some close games and its one of those teams that’s better than their record.
There Are Still A Number Of Undefeated Teams Besides Miami…
Rutgers undefeated, beats Washington 21-18. Battle of RBs. Coleman 16/148, Kyle Monangai 25/132/1. Denzel Boston breakout game. 6/125/2. Gross misses three field goals. Army and Navy are 4-0. They destroyed Temple 42-14. James Madison is a surprisingly 4-0 despite dealing with losing their coaching staff and a bunch of those players transferring with the coaching staff to Indiana. They have even had a couple games scoring 60+ points. Alonza Barnett III has looked really good as well, despite not having really played much.
Duke is also still a surprising 5-0, they beat North Carolina late by 21-20, where UNC lead the first three quarters. Star Thomas put the team on his back and rushed for 166 yards on 30 carries and a TD. Indiana is also undefeated with James Madison’s coaches and players, plus some other big transfers like Kurtis Rourke. BYU is 5-0 as well. Texas and Arch Manning also beat Mississippi State to go 5-0.
UNLV also had no problem replacing Matthew Sluka with Hajj-Malik Williams who hadn’t taken a snap all season and ended up rushing for 119 yards. Penn State is also undefeated after beating Illinois who was also undefeated entering that game. Luke Altmyer struggled after having played solidly the first four games. Penn State ran for 239 yards as a team and collected seven sacks on defense. Drew Allar didn’t do much.
Of Course There Were Close Games This Week As Well.
Kentucky over Ole Miss 20-17. Michigan 27-24 over Minnesota. Oklahoma 27-21 over Auburn. Notre Dame over Louisville 31-24. Texas A&M over Arkansas 21-17, Arkansas run game held in check.
While the final score wasn’t all that close USC’s win over Wisconsin was a close one for the majority of the game. They won 38-21, but Wisconsin was up 21-10 at the half and even after the third quarter USC was up by just four. This was surprising since Wisconsin is a bad team this year.
There Were Also Some Big Wins!
Kentucky who was 2-2 coming into the weekend and was looking really poor on offense and just ok on defense took on undefeated Ole Miss with their plethora of talent on both offense and defense and held them to 17 points. They also kept Jackson Dart under 300 yards and he threw only one TD. Vandagriff had probably his best game of the season.
Of course the other huge win of the weekend was the surprise beating Georgia took from Alabama. Alabama was hammering them until the 4th quarter when they came back a little, but it was too little too late. Jalen Milroe threw and ran all over them. He rushed for 117 yards and threw for 374, he also accounted for four touchdowns on the night. Carson Beck did not play well throwing three interceptions and the Georgia running game went nowhere.
Another big win was SMU who just came over from the AAC blowing out Florida State. Of course FSU is not very good this year, but blowing them out 42-16 was huge for the SMU program. They are also 4-1 on the season. They also picked DJU off three times in that game.
Although it may not seem like it Boise States 45-24 win over Washington State was a big one as well. First WSU was undefeated entering the game and Boise had lost to Oregon earlier and Oregon was the only game against a quality opponent they had up to this point. Ashton Jeanty controlled this game. he had 26 carries for 259 yards and four touchdowns. Boise State is now ranked.
The Freshman Receiver Class Is Having A Huge Impact
You have Ryan Williams with 6 catches for 177 yards and one TD. He just destroyed the Georgia defensive backs. Jeremiah Smith had just five catches for 83 yards and a touchdown, but some of the catches he made were insane one-handed type. Clemson’s Bryant Wesco Jr. had just two catches, but for 104 yards and a touchdown.
Other Interesting Stories
Kansas again lost and is now 1-4. I don’t think anyone saw that record coming with the talent they had coming back. A lot of it is the poor play of Jalon Daniels and his top two receivers Skinner and Arnold.
Utah was undefeated entering the weekend, but coming on their second week without Cam Rising, his replacement Isaac Wilson couldn’t hold it together, threw two interceptions and completed just 50% of his passes. They have Arizona State coming up and Skattebo could give them problems.
