College football has a faking injury problem. For most of the 2024 season, the crosshairs have been on teams where players fake injuries to slow down an opposing offense. On Friday, one conference commissioner, Greg Sankey of the Southeastern Conference, made a ruling regarding players faking injuries. Sankey sent a memo to SEC coaches and athletics directors, calling for penalties and potentially coach suspensions.
Sankey’s ruling has ignited college football fans, specifically with the issue taking center stage this season. Most notably, the Ole Miss Rebels have received the most blowback for faking injuries this season, reaching its peak in a home loss against the Kentucky Wildcats earlier this year. With Sankey’s ruling becoming public on Friday, college football fans flooded social media with their reactions.
Fans React to SEC Ruling on Faking Injuries
According to On3 and Ross Dellenger of Yahoo Sports:
NEWS: Greg Sankey has issued a warning to SEC coaches about faking injuries, including penalties and suspensions, per @RossDellenger
Per Southeastern Conference commission Greg Sankey, faking injuries will lead to penalties and potentially coach suspensions. On3 indicated that a first violation will hold a $50,000 penalty, and “that number increases to $100,000 on the second instance.” A third violation will lead to a head coach suspension. College football fans, experts, and former coaches like Nick Saban have called for a change in teams using fake injuries to suspend play.
Going forward, the Southeastern Conference will crack down hard on teams faking injuries without consequence, much to the delight of the college football world. On Friday, college football devotees flooded social media with reactions. At the same time, many put the Ole Miss Rebels and head coach Lane Kiffin (the biggest abuser of faking injuries) in their crosshairs:

Glad to see someone finally doing something about this. Guarantee the Big 12 won’t do this to their golden boys in Colorado though…

I love this, yet, how do you prove an injury is fake?

Ole Miss not winning another game

This is all Lane wanted btw. He complained about it and when nothing was done he made a mockery of it to the point they HAD to do something. I honestly applaud him

Tomorrow might be the last game Kiffin coaches in 2024.
