In the era of NIL, college football coaches have little patience regarding on-field miscues. With college football booming in revenue and player compensation legal, the sport has become more similar to the professional ranks, with the label “student-athlete” having less meaning. However, that does not mean college coaches can go ballistic on a player, regardless of a missed assignment or in-game slip-up.
On Saturday, in a Sun Belt tilt against the Louisiana-Monroe Warhawks and the Marshall Thundering Herd, an offensive line coach lost control when berating a player. The coach, a Louisiana-Monroe offensive staff member, made physical contact with a player, leading to many college football fans demanding his release.
College Football Fans Lose It After Coach Puts Player on Blast
According to Trey Wallace, a National College Sports Writer/Videographer for Outkick-Fox:

In a Sun Belt contest this weekend, the Lousiana Monroe Warhawks lost to the Marshall Thundering Herd 28-23. More notably, assistant coach Cameron Blankenship made waves on social media after a clip surfaced of him losing his mind on offensive lineman Drew Hutchinson. In the clip, Blankenship awaits Hutchinson’s arrival on the sideline before he gets chest-to-chest and yells at him. He then follows Hutchinson down the sideline before physically contacting the lineman. Wide receiver David Wells eventually stood between the two, potentially saving Blankenship any further embarrassment. A redshirt sophomore, Hutchinson is the team’s backup center.
The fallout of the video showing Blankenship berating the offensive lineman has led to college football fans demanding his firing or resignation. Blankenship is in year one with ULM, serving as the offensive line coach with New Mexico last season. He also worked as an assistant coach with UAB from 2016 to 2021. Nevertheless, college football fans are out for blood following his incident on Saturday:
I don’t care what a STUDENT-athlete does, there is nothing that calls for this reaction and harassing response to their player.
If that coach is willing to do this on the sidelines of a televised game, I can only imagine what happens at practices when the cameras aren’t on.

They have to fire him for this right? Clearly he needs at least a LOA

Coach Cameron Blankenship.
Give him a ring or send him an email and remind him how much of a scumbag he is. pic.twitter.com/fQXQNryOWB— The Herd’s Headset (@TheHerdsHeadset) November 2, 2024
Hey .@ULM_FB! Blankenship should NEVER put his hands on a player. By both your college’s policies and NCAA rules, this coach should be terminated immediately.

That is an adult man losing his mind because a college kid made a mistake. Never should a coach physically go after a player like that. Gross!

That’s one way to make your team not respect you anymore.

No one wants to play for a coach that acts like that.
