College football is in a tough spot with the rampant expansion of player compensation. Although the birth of NIL (name, image, and likeness) was well overdue, the lack of regulations and looser transfer portal rules has turned college football into a shell of its former self. While parity has resurfaced in college football, many coaches have needed help to adapt to the NIL era.
Longtime Oklahoma State Cowboys head coach Mike Gundy, a three-time Big 12 Coach of the Year winner, believes NIL is the driving force behind player movement in college football and is essential in retaining talent. Meanwhile, fans put Gundy on blast for his comments, considering him ill-prepared to lead a Power Five program in today’s climate of college sports.
College Football Fans Take Aim at Mike Gundy

According to On3 Sports on Twitter:
Mike Gundy: ‘Player retention is based on money.’ “If you’re playing on our team and we go 3-9 and right now you’re making $12k, and we say, ‘Hey, if you come back, we’ll pay you $250k.’ What are you gonna do? Player retention is probably 90 percent built on money now. Not other things. It’s changed.”
Gundy, the leadman with the Oklahoma State Cowboys from 2005 to 2024, has coached ten teams to finish the year ranked, including a top ten finish in 2011 and 2021. However, like other head ball coaches at the FBS level, including legendary bench boss Nick Saban, Gundy did not hesitate to express his opinion regarding NIL. Gundy harped on the idea that player rendition is NIL-centric and has little to do with other internal and external factors.
Meanwhile, eight of the top ten NIL earners this season play for a top-ranked team (LSU, Alabama, Oregon, Texas, Miami, and Georgia). The other two top earners, college football stars and Colorado Buffaloes offensive playmakers Shedeur Sanders and Travis Hunter, combined for an NIL valuation of $9.4 million. Nevertheless, fans put Gundy on blast for his recent struggles since the dawn of NIL:
Wait, so your job requires money to keep you?!🤪
