For the first time since 2015, college football’s Heisman Trophy Award could have a discrepancy of around 100 first-place votes. Much like 2015, this year’s rendition of the Heisman Trophy Award will come down to two non-quarterbacks, an eye-opener in today’s college football landscape. Two-way Colorado Buffaloes superstar Travis Hunter leads in betting odds by a wide margin on most sportsbooks. On his tail is Boise State running back Ashton Jeanty, with the star tailback trending towards breaking Barry Sanders’ single-season rushing record set in 1988.
Last weekend, Hunter scored two touchdowns, but Colorado ultimately dropped to 8-3 following an upset loss on the road against the Kansas Jayhawks. Meanwhile, with Boise State trailing 13-10 late on the road against the Wyoming Cowboys and Jeanty ailing with a shoulder injury, the rusher scampered for 53 yards on the team’s game-winning drive. However, to the displeasure of many, including myself, Hunter’s odds moved towards winning the Heisman, with Jeanty losing ground following a 169 rushing day.
Boise State RB Ashton Jeanty Deserves More Recognition
According to Football Fanatics on Twitter:
If Ashton Jeanty doesn’t win the Heisman over Travis Hunter, it just solidifies that it is turning into a popularity contest and not the best player in college football award.
Travis Hunter is arguably the most talented player in college football. He’s a fringe top-ten receiver while playing shutdown defense, an unprecedented role that college football has never seen at this scale. However, the same applies to Boise State running back Ashton Jeanty. Through 11 games, Jeanty has rushed for 2,062 and 27 touchdowns. Compared to Oklahoma State running back Barry Sanders’ historic season in 1988, Jeanty is pacing to become the new FBS leader regarding single-season rushing. With a berth in the College Football Playoff and a solid finish to the season, Jeanty could also eclipse his FBS record of 37 rushing touchdowns.
Travis Hunter’s 2024 college football season will become one of the most unique and special in the sport’s history. He is also a shoo-in as a top-ten pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, barring an injury. However, sportsbooks, mainly the media, have discredited another unique and memorable season, albeit from a running back in the Mountain West Conference. With neither team owning a win over a ranked team and Boise, not Colorado, being the likely College Football Playoff, the sport is doing itself seemingly a disservice by crowing Hunter over Jeanty with the regular season still underway.
