College football continues to pull out all the stops to mitigate head injuries further. With the birth of the Guardian Cap, stricter concussion protocols, and less padded practices, football’s consistent battle to shed the label of unchecked violence persists. However, the nature of the sport will remain just that: violent. On Thursday, one of college football’s most efficient quarterbacks, North Carolina State Wolfpack star Grayson McCall, will call it a career after his most recent concussion.
A superstar with the upstart FBS program Coastal Carolina from 2019 to 2023, McCall transferred to NC State this offseason. Unfortunately, after suffering his second brutal head injury in as many seasons, McCall stepped away from the game at the age of 23. Many college football fans have offered McCall their thoughts and prayers, with his lone season with the Wolfpack lasting just four games.
College Football Fans React to Shocking Retirement of NC State Star

According to Barstool Sports’ flagship podcast, Unnecessary Roughness:
Current NC State QB and former Coastal Carolina legend Grayson McCall has announced his retirement from football due to an injury that he can not come back from… Sad news.
We’ll never forget the mullet magic at Coastal.
McCall is focused on a coaching career.
McCall also wrote a heartfelt letter to his fans through his Instagram, calling his college football journey a “dream” but saying that his latest head injury would cut his playing career short. McCall also thanked God, his family, coaches, and teammates for the opportunity to play four years with the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers and one season with the NC State Wolfpack.
With Coastal Carolina, McCall led the Chanticleers to an 11-1 record in the program’s fourth year competing at the FBS level. The following season, McCall registered 2,873 passing yards and 27 touchdowns while completing 73% of his passes. More notably, he led the country with a 207.6 rating, the second-highest single-season number in FBS history. McCall’s retirement is a brutal blow to an NC State team that has struggled in his absence. Meanwhile, his shocking exit from college football has saddened fans, with many sending their condolences to the fifth-year starter:
All the best to you, Grayson. Go be great! ❤️❤️❤️🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻

So sad the injuries ended this legend's career. We're going to miss Teal Jesus! Would be great to see him return to the CCU sidelines as a coach. pic.twitter.com/GXrQMOEEFq

Coastal legend, forever and always.
I absolutely hate that things ended this way, and I’ll never forgive Target State for their dirty play (and celebrating it) that got us here.
I’d love to see Grayson back at Coastal soon, either as a fan or grad assistant. https://t.co/xIzHUzNDKX
