Last weekend’s most anticipated college football game was undoubtedly the Notre Dame Fighting Irish visiting the Texas A&M Aggies in a primetime-ranked matchup. Notre Dame left College Station as 23-13 winners and entered this week as the fifth-ranked team in the nation. However, after a hard-fought 60-minute battle against the Northern Illinois Huskies on Saturday, Notre Dame football is no longer undefeated despite being a 28-point favorite.
Northern Illinois survived to hold onto a two-point win after a blocked field goal on the game’s final play, giving the program their first win against a top-ten team. With the polarizing Notre Dame now the owner of the worst loss of the 2024 season, fans were quick to clown the Irish via social media.
College Football Fans Jump on Notre Dame Following Major Upset
According to college football reporter Joe Pompilano:
Notre Dame paid Northern Illinois $1.4 million to play them in South Bend today. Northern Illinois just won 16-14.
On Saturday, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish were brutally upset against the Northern Illinois Huskies at home. The Golden Domers registered just 286 yards on offense while surrendering nearly 400 yards to Northern Illinois. The Irish also threw two interceptions, including a brutal pick from quarterback Riley Leonard late in the fourth quarter. Leonard, the prized acquisition for the Irish this offseason, went 20-of-32 for 163 yards and two picks.
Notre Dame football becomes the first-ranked team to lose a home game against an unranked opponent this season. College football fans didn’t hold back when discussing the unreal upset on Saturday, putting the Irish on blast through Twitter:
