Snopes recently fact-checked a viral story that surfaced on social media about Colin Kaepernick and his family.

A story published Wednesday on Latherland ran with what seemed to be a wild quote. The Latherland article wrote that Kaepernick’s adoptive parents said they wanted to “come clean” about Kaepernick’s race and that his race is white:

Colin Kaepernick’s adoptive parents, Brad and Didid Kaepernick, say they’re not going to hide the truth from the public any longer. According to the couple, who took Colin in at the tender age of just three, he’s as white as they are.
“Colin doesn’t have a drop of black in him,” said Didi, “he was always trying to be one of them. We really didn’t know why. But it didn’t matter. Kids play. As he got older, we just kind of…let it happen. He spent a lot of time tanning and told everyone he met at school that his biological mother was black.”

Free agent QB Colin Kaepernick is still waiting to learn if he’ll play a seventh NFL season in 2017. He reached out to the New York Jets this fall.
A few graphs down, even Latherland wrote that the story was likely not real.
“Our own investigation shows that the story is likely fabricated, that Kaepernick’s parents probably aren’t named Brad and Didi, and that it would be pretty difficult for them to do this interview together if he was dead.”

Jordan Liles with Snopes did a fact-check on the Latherland piece after it circulated on social media. Snopes claims that over 1,000 people on social media believed the narrative that Kaepernick is white to be true.

Per the Snopes investigation, they found the entire narrative about Kaepernick’s adoptive parents hiding his true race to be false, as the Latherland site publishes satire:

“However, this item about Kaepernick, his adoptive parents and race was not a factual recounting of real-life events.

Latherland.com is a website under the umbrella of America’s Last Line of Defense, a network of content that’s described on the website as containing “parody, satire, and tomfoolery.”

Any users who continued to read the article to the end would have found several hints that the story was satirical in nature. One paragraph in the article in particular provided a very big hint that said the story was “likely fabricated.”

Kaepernick was born to a white mother and a Black father. He was adopted by Teresa and Rick Kaepernick, who are both white.”

Just another fake news piece about Colin Kaepernick

The former San Francisco 49ers quarterback is the subject of much satire and fake news. The pieces seem to find a reading base in people who want negative narratives around Kaepernick to be true because of his political stances.

The fact that people have to resort to fake news to hurl mud at Kaepernick goes to show many of his enemies don’t have enough real dirt.
