It’s been over seven years since former San Francisco 49ers starting signal-caller Colin Kaepernick took a snap under center. Kaepernick, who opted out of the final year of his contract with San Francisco during the 2017 offseason, has not returned to the NFL since his controversial approach to protesting police brutality. However, Kaepernick continues to push for an NFL opportunity, including expressing interest in returning to the professional ranks during an interview with Sky Sports earlier this week.
Kaepernick shared his interest in an NFL return and voiced his claim to partake in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, with flag football making its debut. Kaepernick will be one of many former and current quarterbacks vying to make the Olympic roster following the massive success of the 2024 Paris Games.
Colin Kaepernick: Eyeing 2028 LA Olympics
In an interview earlier this week, former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick expressed his interest in participating in flag football during the 2028 LA Olympics. For the first time in Olympic history, flag football, or any variation of American football, will hit the world stage. Kaepernick is ready to make his football return and has not ruled out making it in 2028 during the Olympics.
“Hopefully, we’ll be out there. We’re gonna work on some things and see if we can make it in there. But we’d love to be out there”
However, according to Eric Fisher of Front Office Sports, Kaepernick could have a tough time making the USA team, with the NFL ready to structure their annual training camp schedule around the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic games. Meanwhile, many current NFL players are interested in playing flag football at the 2028 LA Olympics. Miami Dolphins All-Pro wideout Tyreek Hill plans to make his Olympic debut in flag football. At the same time, Philadelphia Eagles passer Jalen Hurts headlined the NFL-featured announcement video showcasing the arrival of flag football at the Olympics.
Olympics: Debuting Flag Football in 2028
Alongside global flag football ambassador and star Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts, the NFL and the International Federation of American Football announced that the sport will debut at the 2028 LA Olympic games. The Olympic version of flag football will feature a 50-yard field that’s 25 yards wide and houses the traditional ten-yard endzones. The game will be five-on-five, with teams attempting to score in four downs.
Outside the heavily favored United States, the countries of Mexico, Canada, and Germany could show promise during the debut of flag football in the 2028 Olympics.
Colin Kaepernick: Longtime San Francisco 49ers Passer
From 2011 to 2016, quarterback Colin Kaepernick started 58 games for the San Francisco 49ers, cultivating a 28-30 record. The 36th overall pick in the 2011 NFL Draft, Kaepernick played a reserve role as a rookie before taking over for an injured Alex Smith the following season. Kaepernick shined in relief, throwing for 1,814 yards, ten touchdowns, and three picks in seven starts. He also rushed for 415 yards and five scores. In the postseason, the Nevada product retained the starting position over Smith. Kaepernick dominated in the playoffs, tallying 1,062 yards and seven touchdowns in three games.
Kaepernick remained the starter the following season, throwing for 3,197 yards and 21 touchdowns against eight picks. However, he began to regress, starting with a 19-touchdown, ten-pick effort in 2014. In the next two seasons, the 49ers went 3-16 in Kaepernick starts, with the Passer declining to remain with the team following the conclusion of the 2016 season.
